Had to Make a Trip to the Dentist Today

The equine Dentist that is. Time to have the Percherons teeth floated and other proceedures. They give them just enough juice to make them woozy but not enough to put them down. That's me holding his head and the contraption in to keep his mouth open. The Doc has a air powered tooth file. All went well. Bob

Horses need care also. Daughter keeps her horses at our place. every now and then I see the vet doing that same thing. Looks like those big boys are a hand full. Stan

She had the dentist here once for a floating but ended up with a extraction also.
All I could think of was "oh sure the horses have a dentist but I don't"

I'm not Bob, but on riding horses, they need their teeth floated for a couple different reasons. First their teeth wear in such a manner that when you put a bit in their mouth, it will rub on a "hook", and cause pain. Another reason is their teeth will get uneven and make it difficult for them to eat.
I would guess Bob's were having issues with the bit, they sure looked like they were keeping their weight when I saw them.

They don't really have to be floated, but it's good if they are once every couple of years. The main reason for floating teeth is to flatten them out. As they eat they start to get sharp similar to a knife and so you grind them back flat so it is easier for them to chew their food and get the nutrients out of the food.

Not the one pictured, but the other ones teeth were pretty sharp and when he would eat grain he would not do a good job of grinding it up and you would see a lot more whole kernels of oats in his manure than you would in the other ones. Bob
