3010 won't crank

It has been starting fine and now it won't crank. Lights shine bright, Gen and oil lights come on and slightly flash when I turn the key to start. Not even a click. Ideas on where to begin? is there a safety switch somewhere?

Yes, there should be a neutral switch. But since the lights dim, that sounds more like a low battery or starter problem. Try cleaning the cable connections, jumping it, or charging the battery first.

If this is a gas/LP model, try shorting from the battery post to the small terminal of the solenoid (be absolutely SURE it is in neutral!) If it cranks, could be the neutral switch or ignition switch. If there is voltage getting to the small terminal of the solenoid when you try to start it, but the voltage is low, a starter relay can be installed close to the starter. That will reduce the voltage drop to the solenoid.

If it doesn't crank could be the brushes are worn down into the plastic holders, the solenoid is getting weak or just needs the linkage cleaned. The starter is simple and field serviceable, take a look inside, it may be an easy fix.

If this is a diesel 24v start system... and cable cleaning/charging/jump starting doesn't help, you'll need a shop manual and do some diagnostics!

It is a diesel, both batteries show around 11V under load. Even if they were a little low I would think it would try to crank....

I have to giggle my gearshift sometimes to get the neutral saftswitch to work. I would put a test like on the solenoid and see if it's getting power when the key is in start pose. Also you might rap the starter with a hammer.

Yeah I ran the shifter thru the gears but that didn't help. Tapped on the starter and solenoid with a hammer handle...just weird that it just stopped working.

(quoted from post at 21:24:53 09/01/16) Neutral safety switch is in the control support under the shifter.

I think I saw that when the cowl and hood were off. Will take the cowl off and check it out. I wasn't sure if there was a safety switch on the clutch...so the tractor will start with the clutch out if it is in Park??

CUTE, OLLIE letting us know you have a "smart phone"! You make the gearshift GIGGLE while the key "POSES" and the the solenoid is all about "LIKE"! LOL!

a ha! I forgot to proof read before posting. The phone is smarter than me.

Mine just has to be in neutral. Need to check if you are getting power from the key switch to the starter or you can jump it at the solenoid. Just put it in park and don't run over yourself. Shouldnt be any clutch safety switches.

also I was repairing a 2010 that was doing the same thing. It had power to the solenoid but still would not start. Ended up putting a new ignition switch in it. Was not getting enough power through the switch.

I agree neutral start switch could not be making contact simply from plastic actuator(key 18) wear if so optioned. Another possibly is a corroded battery cable connections.

If memory serves me right, there's a metal tab that pushes a safety switch button when the shift is in park. Try cranking while pushing the shift ahead all the way in park.

Yeah the switch was a hair out of reach....took the cover off and pushed on it with my thumb and she fired right up. Thanks for the help!

Plastic arm, Key #18, operates the safety switch, and is adjustable.

The flimsy sheetmetal nuts that hold the switch to the bracket had backed off or were never tightened to begin with, all is good now.
