Using Roundup around raspberry bushes ????

Over the past few years, my raspberry bush area in the garden has become infested with lawn grass. Trimming the grass is getting to be a pain and the grass just keeps self seeding and it is spreading. I thought maybe I would spray some Roundup (or equivalent) herbicide carefully on the grass. Will this affect the raspberry bushes? Any comments or instructions on application are appreciated. Thanks ......

I would keep trimming, as bothersome as it is. I don't know if you can be careful enough when you spray. There is always a light mist in the air. You could wiping or dobbing the grass with a roundup soaked rag if you still want the grass gone. It doesn't take much. I laid a rubber glove with diluted roundup on it on the grass and killed the grass. Another thing to watch is the weeds that will come up after the grass is gone. The weeds will be worse than the grass.

100% Round UP --That cost close to $100.00 a gal., can be applied with a paint brush on just what you want to kill.
I have never tried [i:88f2d6e966]generic[/i:88f2d6e966] RU.

I failed to mention that painting one leaf per plant will kill that plant's root system.

Crazy Horse,

I don't know about Roundup, but I have a nice red raspberry patch that I've had for about 6 or 7 years. Nice fruit, multiple times each summer.

Last spring I had a really bad infestation of Japanese Beetles. They love raspberry leaves. I sprayed my lawn with Malathion to kill the beetles and decided to give the raspberries a shot of it too. That was a HUGE mistake. I severely injured virtually all of the plants and killed many of them.
So, I don't know about Roundup, but I do know not use Malathion again. I plan to order some replacement plants this fall and try to restore the patch.

Good luck with your weed control. I pull and clip grass out of my patch all summer long.

Spraying roundup around raspberries can be tricky. They seem to be very sensitive. Roundup does make a gel applicator now which provides better control (if the patch is small).

Can you use the glyph in the spring, before the raspberries leaf out? That would at least give you a head start next year.

Use Sevin next time. Just be aware of time to harvest interval.
Malathion can also injure McIntosh, Macoun and Cortland variety apple trees.

Roundup is bad stuff, found to cause memory loss. You may not be able to find your raspberry bushes.

Your life.

Although true--I had to laugh!

If you touch any green or cut areas of your raspberries it will kill them as well. I wouldn't.

Select is a grass killer that is labeled to be sprayed on many many garden crops. It comes in many generic names as well. I would check to see if that would be labeled for your use.

4520bw,

Have you any idea where they came up with that name? Is it supposed to be Sevin plus one? I've seen it on the shelf at Home Depot, but I've never really paid much attention to it. It sounds like you have had good luck with it. Thanks for the tip.

Try a product like poast or clethodim that will kill grasses in vegetables.I like to mulch mine to.

I got tired of doing my best to keep the weeds and grass out of the raspberry patch. Finally decided that the raspberries just weren't worth the effort. I sprayed them with a combination of Roundup and brush killer. Raspberries are gone.

I had some Japanese honeysuckle (an invasive species) that stays green most of the winter. Roundup is supposed to kill it. It finally did kill it, but the raspberries that were scattered amongst the honeysuckle, died too, and they didn't have any leaves on them when I sprayed.

As some have noted, raspberries are much more sensitive to glyphosate than some other plants. Be very careful with Roundup around raspberries. I do use glyphosate to control weeds around other perennial crops (like my fruit trees) although with some care.

Try sethoxydim--available around me for homeowners in tiny jugs called Grass Beater. It will kill grass and not the raspberries. (Although I still try not to spay the raspberries too much, if only because Grass Beater is somewhat expensive.)
