Ran when parked. Really!

I'm working on this tractor for some friends.
My question is, when do you think it was parked?
Their best guess is 15 years ago.
It was their Dad's tractor and it's been so long they don't remember.
BTW, the carb looked just like this inside. So does the gas tank.
I rebuilt the carb and it runs now, on my temporary tank.
It runs amazingly well actually. A sticky governor but no smoke.

I call foul. That's at least 20. When was leaded
phased out? I'm betting it was filled from a farm
barrel of leaded.

Did it smell like strawberry kool-aide? Seems like
once you get rancid gas on your hands you smell it
for three days.

It may be 20 NJA, they simply don't remember.
I would bet it was filled from the farm storage tank.
All of their tractors would have been fueled that way.
It was not unusual around here to see a gas and diesel
tank setting side by side in later years.

Kool-Aid? I can't say it smells anywhere near that good.
This stuff stinks to high heaven.
When I scooped that goo out of the sediment bowl with
my finger I tried to fling it off and it wouldn't come off.
Attempting to wipe it off with a rag only rubbed it in like
thickened linseed oil. I still don't have all of the color off.
Some hand cleaner and a shower got rid of the smell tho.
At least I think so. I guess Joan will let me know for sure! ;)

Worked on one like this earlier this summer. Used acetone to clean the tank of that black sludge, then power washed with hot water, then strapped the tank to the rear wheel of my H and put in a gallon of muratic acid and 6 feet of 5/16 chain to get rid of the rust and power washed again to neutralize the acid. Ran the jacked up wheel in first and reverse for half an hour to agitate the tank, chain, and rust. Couldn't save the sediment bowl it was a mushy mess internally. Good luck, this H sat for 25+ years.

OH man what a nice bowl! I have never seen one that bad. Now the carb is way too pretty and you will need to match the paint on the rest of the tractor to it! I have use MEK for years to get out crud in tanks. Pressure washer works good after a cleaning with that stuff. SOMETHING I have used once lately is E85. DON't get it on the paint and don't accidently put it in any machine you own! It took a pile of crud out of an old Eagle gas safety can slick as you please. Now is clean as a whistle and you should have seen what came out. Good luck with her.

You "seniors" will remember the Cushman Motor "Cycle", the Eagle? I went on a potential buying trip for one. While I was kicking the flat tires and
asking the owner questions, I removed the gas cap and had a look. Yepper you guessed it. About a half a tank full of solid, I mean solid, not liquid
varnish. I passed.
