fence charger

Having trouble with lightning knocking our fence charger. Two repairs in a few days, about $60 worth. My understanding is that the lightning surge comes in on the house wiring. Is there any surge protector I can install? I'm not always there to unplug the charger.

yes, whole house surge arrestors, takes up two spaces in the panel. google or check home depot. others wire to the panel's buss but mounts external to the panel.

Well you can use a surge protector where it plugs into like you would on a computer and they also make them that go between the fence charger and the hot wire and if you have both that would probably help a good bit

Helped a guy with that years ago. We installed multiple ground rods close to the charger.
He lives on the rockiest piece of ground In our area.

When we put ours in we were told to put about ten eight inch turns secured with a couple zip ties in the lead-out wire, in addition to a fuse type of suppressor in the same wire. We also had a knife switch in a convenient spot to disconnect the fence from the charger when we knew that a storm was coming. I think that the surge is more likely to come in from a mile or two of fence, than from the two hundred feet of wire coming in from the transformer on the street. Between the different methods of protection we never lost a fencer.

I had a problem with lightning added a lightning protector where it hooks to fence cured problem. never had problem with surges have had pole next to house hit three times in one year. just trips fuse on pole.
