OT, Austin, Tx

Wife and I are thinking of visiting Austin, Tx mid October. What are things to do on a weekend that are pure Texas? We are from Missouri. TIA.

October 21~23 is when the United States Grand Prix race will be held at the Circuit of the Americas outside of Austin.

See the LBJ Ranch (Stonewall); State Capital Building; LBJ Library; Aquarena Springs (San Marcos); River Walk (San Antonio); caves (a bunch of 'em in the area); Broken Spoke (dance hall); Bullock Museum, just to name a few. kelly

If you're set on Austin, the pink granite Capital building is magnificent. Either use your phone or ask the nice lady at the info desk to recommend a BBQ joint, there are plenty in the city. I don't know if you drink/dance but Austin is famous for it's night life along Sixth Street. Be forewarned, there is a saying "Keep Austin Weird" and if you move around the city you are sure to find some "weird" people, places and things. A single weekend isn't long enough to experience all of it.
As stated below, there is nothing more TEXAS than the Alamo in San Antonio but that is a whole nother trip...

(quoted from post at 20:32:46 08/17/16) visiting Austin, Tx .........things to do on a weekend that are pure Texas?
ustin does not equal "pure Texas". Other wise: Look at the pylons on overpasses for the Texas outline stamped in the concrete. Make sure you stay at a hostile that has a Belgian waffle maker that is in the shape of Texas. If you imbibe in adult beverages take in a movie at the Alamo Draft House (Austin is where the chain started). There is a donut shop that sells Texas ego size donuts. If your driving around down there allow extra transit time for all the traffic.

One great thing, but not "pure Texas", is Fry's Electronics. I could spend several days in there.

Hippie Hollow is just outside Austin on Travis Lake. It's the only "legally recognized clothing-optional public park in the State of Texas".

Save the BBQ for KC or Memphis.

I live just south of Austin. The Capitol and Bullock State Museum are good sights. For BBQ go south about 30 miles to Lockhart. For weird shopping, SoCo, the South Congress area just south of Lady Bird Lake. If you enjoy walking there are trails around L. B. Lake downtown. Unless you crave risk, avoid 6th Street, homeless panhandlers during the day and drunks, fights, and crime at night. There are several scenic roads up along the lakes and also out west toward Johnson City (and the LBJ Ranch) and Fredericksburg. Many, many wineries around F'burg and downtown is a tourist trap.. I mean destination. In San Marcos Dick's Garage has a very nice collection of antique and classic cars. In Austin be prepared to sit in traffic. Another poster suggested the Alamo and Riverwalk in San Antonio. I agree, both worth a visit. I can't claim the pic,my daughter took it.

Yep the line can get long. Don't know how it is now. But last time I was in Austin. It took me almost an hour to go five blocks. Traffic was a nightmare.
