Chevrolet 1998 1500 front differential

Changing oil on a newly acquired 98 tahoe with 160,000 and noticed a little oil around the front differential on the left side. The shaft next to differential moves up and down just a bit, right side does not, oil is full. I went over to my 96 1500 pickup with 210,000 on it and it has no wiggle. Went over to the my 98 1500 with 110,000 and both shafts have a little wiggle, oil full and just a little dried oil around the shafts. I have checked the oil on the pickups from time to time and never had to add any, but never took the time to check for looseness. I don't use 4wd too often and kick it back to 2wd as soon as the situation passes. How much play is acceptable or is any movement cause for concern, Thanks for any information.

A little looseness is normal. The left side is a short shaft, only about 5" or so, there is a single needle bearing just inside the seal, so there is not much to prevent the shaft from rocking slightly when not under load.

Pretty common for the seal to leak a little on those. Might want to just clean it up, check the oil level. The oil level plug is right there in front the axle that is leaking. There is also a vent hose connected to a barb fitting above the axle. Be sure it is clear and the hose intact. If it is clogged the gearcase can pressurize and cause the seal to leak worse.

Yep, I've seen a lot of those leaking. The seal and/or bearing is not a very big job to do. Getting the stub axle out might be the biggest pain, but it just slides in/out and is held in by a clip which may be tough to release . Slide hammer is usually the best tool for removal. After the stub is out the seal and bearing can be service. Those blind hole bushing/bearing pullers to use with the slide hammer work good for that, also the longer the slide hammer will be better.

Thanks for the replies, oil level is just under check plug and i will check on the vent. I will keep an eye on them and see if they get any worse. They have been good trucks.
