Welding machine advise

I have an old Lincoln AC 225 that has been sitting about 25 or 30 years. It was left to me by my FIL. I got it hooked up today to see if it still worked. The heat range is stuck, it was on 70 and I tried to crank it up and it was real hard to turn and jumped to 90 and won't move now. It would burn a rod. I am going to go into it and would like suggestions of what to look for. To keep it tractor related I have run a JD 40 20 on his farm helping out.

My first guesses are mud dobbers, mouse nests, and rust.

Could be it just needs cleaning up, but something may now be broken.

I have one of those that pretty much did the same thing to me. I of course unplugged it and opened up the back of it. I then cleaned up all the contacts and all and now it works just fine. The boy had tried to adjust it with it still on and the rod had hit the ground wire so it was trying to weld as he was adjusting it which in this case causes an arc at the switch so that messed it up a bit

As said needs cleaning more than likely. In the short term try getting a good hold od the selector switch and pull out before you try to turn it. When I cleaned up the contacts on mine I realized the switch sets in a saw tooth type holder. when you try to turn it it has to slide up and over several serrated teeth to reach the next setting. Sounds like it is hung up between settings.

That selector switch is serviceable usually without even having to buy any parts. Many threads on cleaning that selector and its contents with some google searching.

Parts are available in the unlikely event any would be needed.

The switch is easy to take apart after you open things up.

Grease the switch shaft before you put it back together and it takes a lot less effort to move - or at least ours did.

Thanks for the help! I went into it today and all it needed was a little lube. The contacts looked good.
