Remote cylinder ID and info needed

Picked up an old shredder and it has this remote cylinder on it. I have seen these old JD cylinders before but have no experience with them. I understand that you can set the disk at the top so that it triggers a depth stop or something like that?
So exactly what is this type of cylinder called? How is it supposed to work? This thing leaks and needs rebuilt. Is it worth rebuilding like a normal cylinder, or is there a bunch of parts in side that makes it more complicated and expensive? I assume that since you don't see these around much anymore, they didn't work very well.
Educate me please!

That is a newer JD stop cylinder.4430 era. Maybe still being made?Should have common orings/seal etc. A kit from JD is available. It is worth rebuilding. The last time I heard, that cylinder was over $200. Probably 300 today. Go talk to your JD parts man.

Several tractor brands made a cylinder with that type stop, Oliver, Moline, IH in addition to JD. The problem with all of them is that as soon as they start leaking, even a little, they push the stop and continually set deeper so reliable depth control was a problem. They are good cylinders otherwise for the most part.

I think there was another JD cylinder almost identical except it was originally green and had pipe thread hose ports and was of the 2-cylinder era and a lower pressure rating. This one looks like it has the O-ring ports and has a higher pressure rating, probably because it is of later vintage.
