John Deere/Allis Chalmers Story

Talked to a guy at an old tractor show today. He said that in 1939, John Deere built an experimental rear-engined tractor. There were 5 prototypes made, most were subsequently scrapped, one "escaped". John Deere proclaimed them impractical, and stopped the project. The engineer that envisioned it still thought it was a good idea. World War II put a halt to any further development. After the war, the engineer gave the idea to an engineer friend who worked at Allis Chalmers. He promoted it, and it became the Allis Chalmers model G. Supposedly, there is one of the experimental units in a museum somewhere, and one sold at auction a few years ago in Ohio for a very high price.
Anyone have any idea if this story checks out?

There was such a tractor was a 101. There was an article about it in two-cylinder magazine a while back (can't find it now) but here is a picture of it.

Sure doesn't look like a rear engine to me...mid engine maybe. I can't see any resemblance to this....so I will call BS on the story.

Story I always heard was it was when the L LA and or M was being developed. They were coming up with ideas obviously some were terminated.

Rear engine means engine behind the seat, not in front of seat. And I have seen that 101 many a time. Went through the families museum already altho a few years ago. That is here in western Ohio

I agree. I never heard anything like that in any of the AC training sessions, where they were pretty complete in disclosing the history of different products and models.
