O.T. 2007 Ford Freestyle transmisson

Son's van. They drove it 60 or 7 miles yesterday, acting normal. This morning they started it up and it was making some high pitched whine. He tried to drive it. No response in any gear. He checked the fluid and it was fine. I went in after lunch and had him start it up. A little whine, but I have heard worse. I asked him if he checked the fluid while it was running. He said no. I checked it while running. It was above the full mark. I doubt if it has been checked in the year they have owned it. I checked it several more times to be sure. I then had him move the shifter thru the gears to see if it was operating correctly. All parts were in place and moving. I ran out of ideas so I talked to my mechanically inclined son, and he didn't have any other ideas. The son who it belongs to was on the net researching the issue. With the symptoms, he thought it might be the torque converter or a pump. Any ideas on this or what to check next? Thanks, Roy

My wife had a 02 Windstar which I think is the same thing with a different body on it. She dropped the kids off one morning on her way to work when she went to back up same deal no movement. It wound up to be the torque converter went out. It wasn't a terribly expensive fix.

Pretty sure Freestyle's had a CVT transmission. Even Ford can't get parts and has been fighting a major lawsuit over the freestyle tranny's for years.

Look up how the CVT is built and you'll understand the failures.

CVT transmission in the Freestyle is known for failure. Fluid changes are extremely expensive so most didn't bother. Supposed to be done at 60-70K and the dealers usually screwed it up when they did do a few.

Freestar or Freestyle? Freestar is a van and likely has a stripped pump drive. Freestyle is a station wagon and likely has a dead CVT. Your topic heading says Freestyle, but your post says van.

Nothing that about $6000 won't fix. SAD how things have gotten to that point for a simple tranny failure.
