Farmall H won't start!

The other day I go to start my farmall with a no.5 mower to mow road sides when it won't turn over. Nothing, no clicking from the starter or anything. If you keep holding the ignition switch it will get warm. However the lights work and such so I know the battery is good. I've pull started it before with my Ford jubilee with no problem. But I tried it yesterday and I put the farmall in 4th gear as always to start it and the wheels dont turn the motor over, they just lock up then turn in opposite directions. Tried it in 5th but that gears too high but the wheels actually spin normally in that gear. Then we tried it with a 34 ton pickup and the farmall acted the same. So now I'm at a dead end and could really use some expertise, summers almost over and id like to do some mowing with the old H before summers over.

Starter is stuck in the flywheel ringer. Common problem on those old Farmalls.Just loosen the starter bolts and shake the starter a bit.Should freeup imediatly.Retighten and start tractor. While you are at it,check conectons at battery and sttarter. Make sure they are clean and bright.

Make sure that battery ground strap is bolted right directly to the starter mount bolt. Avoid all those rusty corroded frame joints. Made a huge difference on my 1950 "H".

So I pulled the starter off and pushed the little gear back then moved the ground to the starter bolt and cleaned the battery terminals, then I pushed the starter button and it made a few faint popping noises and started to smoke a little. Should I clean the rest of the connections or does that change things?? Thanks

Sounds like it is time to take the starter off and take it to an auto parts store and have it checked since it sounds like the start has gone bad on you

The button is what was popping and smoking, I took the starter off and put It on jumper cables and hooked it to my ford jubilee and the starter worked fine

Those buttons do go bad, if it is on 6V a lot of amps go through them and not what they used to be.

I put a ford solenoid on mine so it would not carry all the current through button.

This site has solenoids and buttons.

Here is link to solenoid

All of the starter buttons made in the "Land of All Right" are junk. I put a new one that came in a Standard Ignition brand box work twice and fried. I had to really search to find a US made starter button and it works great. If the starter drive was stuck and you continued to push on the starter button you have certainly fried the starter button. You have also fried the battery connection inside the starter. The stud on the starter is only soldered to the field connection inside the starter. With all of current that was flowing, I bet it now has a broken connection in the starter. Don't ask me how I know this. Been there done that......
