What is this? It's taking over lots of my hay fields. It doesn't seed out a lot (I usually mow before it does), it kills any grass around it, and it has a HUGE crown to it. The tractor and mower heave up when you go over a bunch. The crown is 16-18 inches across and the grass itself can easily be three feet tall. It stays growing in bunches and does not fill in an area solid. I'm thinking it must spread through rhisome as fast as it is taking over. It reminds me of how a fountain/pampas grass grows. As it gets big the center of the crown sometimes does not produce.

I forget the name of it but I have seen it in the road ditches in South Dakota. It will be the only thing green when everything else is dead from dry weather.
 
Looks like Johnson grass to me. Have that in the pasture and it is hard to kill. It has nut in the roots that they can pull energy from to survive
 
Johnson grass.hard to kill.let it make seed and birds scatter it.blackbirds and starlings migrate and do an excellent job of scattering that stuff.some states have it on the bad list noxious weed list. roundup just burns it down and if ground is wet or get a rain it pops back up strong

I'm not an expert on any kind of weed or grass, but I do have plenty of both here on my farm.

I have LOTS of Johnson grass, and it doesn't look anything like the sample that you show in your picture. I've never grown Bahia grass, but my understanding of it (right or wrong) is that it is a fine bladed grass.

I think that what you have pictured is "clumping fescue". Please take a look at the hot-link that I have included with this note and see if the stuff in the hotlink looks like what you are dealing with. I have some of this "clumping fescue" growing on my farm in southern Middle Tennessee.
