I just bought a Ford 1220. I have to spray ether in the air intake to get it started. Once it's running it runs decent for a minute or two and after driving it around for a second it starts smoking and fall on it's face and dies. Any suggestions would be great!!!

I have no experience with the 1220 in particular, but any diesel needs air, fuel, and compression. It sounds to me like you have a fuel delivery problem. start with the
fuel filter and any screens in the system. Check for any possible leaks, too.

I have a 1220 that will not start if the engine is cold even in hot weather without turning the ignition key to the left for a few seconds to allow the glow plugs to heat up. Don't use any ether if your glow plugs are working. Check for a rat nest in the air cleaner. They like to build in the rubber hose that goes to the air cleaner. There is a small fuel filter in the fuel shut off valve underneath the fuel tank. There are a couple bleeder screws on the injector pump. Mine has 1900 hours on it and never a problem..

I just changed the air and fuel filter. The sediment bowl had a 1/2 inch of sludge in the bottom and the fuel filter was nearly collapsed and full of garbage. Still wont run very well after I changed out the fuel filter.

With the sediment bowl off will fuel run out of the tank good?? May be a collapsed fuel line..Loosen the injector lines at the injectors with it running and see if you get any air bubbles..

I was just saying the fuel runs out great into the filter. I took the fuel lines off the injectors and turned the engine over. The fuel dripped out of all three lines. I did use the glow plugs and held the ignition for about 10 seconds on the glow plug. It starts after that but runs very rough and smokes a lot.

Had one of these a few years back until a buddy talked me into selling it to him (mistake). Sorry now back to your problem.

Not saying this is it but is common for these symptoms. These units with the forward facing horizontal exhaust systems are know to have the muffler get plugged up creating exactly what you are talking about.

There a few things you can do.

1 - Right after start up use a hammer handle or other object and tap (medium hard) on the muffler and see if black gunk starts blowing out. If so keep tapping until clear then put tractor under load.

2 - Remove muffler and put tractor under load

If either corrects issue replace the muffler as even if tapping clears it up it will plug back up as you can never get all the crap out of it.

Hope this helps
