I'm having issues with my tractor popping while in C range only. This "pop" sounds just like a transmission jumping out of gear BUT it never misses a beat BUT I'm always expected a strip out or teeth shear. It has to be under load AND going up a grade, NEVER just in a pull flat ground that I've known BUT I've attempted to avoid all C range use loaded. It is 4x4 BUT doesn't matter in or out of It pops the same.
History...I bought the tractor new and it's definitely been grand...I use it. Fall of 2014 I had the 2nd clutch installed, spring 2015 while using it done it's first "pop" while pulling a grade in C range. It doesn't matter 1st or 2nd speed (different internal shafts rules those out). It's not a consistant pop like a tooth on a timer every so many rounds. I'm mechanical but not a good shop to work in but we broke it down 3 different times hunting anything wrong. The first time I found the remenants of a PTO bearing that I'd replaced yrs before and evidently didn't get all pieces out and we assumed that they had meshed in the gears causing pops....NO... 2nd time we looked through all parts and rotated without complete disassembly, even checked one of the planetaries, 3rd time the B-C shiftrail had broke. This can be replaced from top end in 2 minutes once top is off trans (I got that trick videoed)...again we assumed that was the problem...NO... I talked to several mechanics around here and John Deere with NO avail.
One mechanic told me he had seen bearing spacers destroy and the bearings would eventually all work to one side and a pop of gears slipping and bearings jumping to refill the gap. Completely disassembling a trans is beyond my time frame so I hired it done looking for a bearing....No bad bearing there found but did replace the shift fork (worn and slightly bent)(John Deere has beefed up the new one) and the B-C range shift collar and a few other parts on that assembly. AGAIN we assumed that was the problem (very little collar sits on the 2 shafts in C range) and reassemblied...worked good for 2 weeks and now has started popping again. The mechanic drove it himself and said it's definitely it the range side BUT no idea why due to everything else looked good.
I'm willing to open again BUT WE both agree we'd like a knowledged opinion.
John Deere offers a complete B-C range kit (we found out later) and I wonder if they redesigned something that we didn't replace, the fork was heavier built.
