they are tearing up everything

Can also add to this. If you are in North Jersey and further north you can run out to your local Horse corn field. Look for ears that have the tassle going from tan to brown and still show just a touch of green at the ear. Pick one and strip it. Take a bite. If it is still sweet and the kernels will be a little on the small side. Take a bunch home and have dinner! It is only for a couple of days that you can eat field corn. Larger ears and just a tiny taste like Fretos corn chips. Give it a try. Had a couple about three days ago down here in south jersey and it was pretty good!

The raccoons seem to be enjoying mine. They share with the birds
and I had a feed for supper tonight. The coons have to lay on
their backs to pick some of it.

Aww, that's so frustrating.

We stopped growing sweetcorn here because racoons were getting most of it every year. Tried electric fence a couple summers... but moving it each time we needed to mow was a hassle.

So we just buy our corn at a local produce stand... and gave up the battle with the coons.

I guess that makes them "the winner". :(

I have had crows do the same thing, just not as bad. Some times they would stop at the worm. Other times they just kept going.Stan

Larry Sweet corn is hard to keep animals out of. I have found it to be less of a problem if it is planted with field corn. There is more for the animals to eat so they focus on the sweet corn less. Also I usually have the sweet corn closer to the house/buildings and have always had dogs around. The dogs deter a lot of the pests in the garden.

A couple strands of electric fence keeps the coons out. A couple of live traps with marshmallows is a great way to rid of them too. I plant rounds up corn and the BT keeps the bugs away so no damage from birds coming in to get the worms.

Neighbor plants his sweet corn at there different times. He uses electric fence solar lights that change colors, traps, a 22, and singing Elvis. Elvis is a scare crow, radio playing.

We have squirrels. Squirrels prefer to eat field corn that has harden shells. Usually deer or coyotes will eat the corn like you pic. Look for deer or coyote footie prints.

The ole woman is putten our excess up for enjoyment later,,
With practically nobody hunting them coons and ground hogs is getting to the point around here that planting lots of sweet corn and letting them have their share doesn't work anymore. We have a pretty big patch this year and even though coons and groundhogs is thicker than bark on a log we haven't lost the first ear to them. Three electric wires, a few dishes of fly bait and coke inside the wire to get the fence jumpers and an Elkhound in the yard. The field corn on the farm next to us isn't fairing so well. It is about 1/4 mile from the house to a creek and even out by the road every stalk is stripped from the creek 2/3s of the way to the house. Sweetfeet we spray Round up under the fence to take care of that problem.

I mixed up some Flybait the other day. So far I've gotten 5 coons and a possum with a litter of little ones attached to her.

Two week ago I picked, passed out to daughters and ate 6 dozen ears. Which is why I have always grown sweet corn. I like giving it away. last week I went on vacation when I came back every ear in the field is now gone. Raccoons have done it for the second year. I put out Yellow Marlon mix several weeks ago and my dog stopped barking at night so I thought I was good.....not. I give up. not going to plant sweet corn next year. I'll plant more taters instead. My tater corp is over the top and every one like them too.
