I have just overhauled a Woods 121-2 10ft rotary cutter with three gearboxes. When I started to use it, the blades are hitting during the start up. Is there a way to time the gear boxes? I positioned the blades at 90 degrees to each other, but the blades can still make contact during start up.

If you did it right what you are hearing is the two blades on each dish hitting but dish to dish is not happening. Should hear just a quick snap when it kicks in then nothing else.

timed correct.. .blades can hit each other on the same spindle and also hit the deck when starting up... if the blade hole and bolt have a bit of wear, they will hit the deck till they get enough speed to swing out.

Bingo.

This is yet another reason to change the blade bolts every once in awhile.

This cutter does not have the stump jumper disc option. It has the blades attached to spindle arm. The two arms are not exactly 90 degrees from each other when the square drive tube is installed because I did not think it was necessary to move the gear cogs in the gear box to be exactly 90 degrees to prevent contact of the blades. This is a cutter I just bought used and overhauled. I had not used it before to know if it was normal to have contact noise during the start up. I do not have a manual to know if I had it timed correctly.
