Looking for three replacenent belts for my flail mower. Is the inside notched belt any better than the plain un notched belt? What about three belts ganged together. The smallest pulley is 7 1/2 inch. Stan

Notched belts are SUPPOSED to be more resistant to cracking and are reported to cool better. I really don't know if there's any truth to it because I have seen lots of both notched and regular belts on squirrel fans on AC units/air handlers that run 24/7/365 and there doesn't seem to be any wear difference between them.

All my mower belts are Kevlar belts. None of my mower belts are notched. If you have 3 belts on same pulley won't they have to be matched like back in the day when you had 2 belts on a car using the same pulley?

The belt info in the link should be a guide to what you need. The last one in the chart seems to me to be appropriate. Match the angle and length. Jim

I have two flail mowers, Ford and JD, both only have one belt and all I know is not all belts are made the same. I was buying belts from R&R mowers and they barely lasted a full mowing season. When I got the JD mower I wanted to start with a new belt so I ordered one from a JD dealer to make sure I got the correct one. Discovered the belts between the two mowers were the same so threw the old belt off the JD on the Ford, two years later both belts look just like they did when I put them on.

The idler pulley on both flail mowers forces the belt to bend inwards, the R&R belts would start cracking and loosing rubber in chunks only leaving the outer part of the belt. Was getting ready to try a notched belt thinking the reverse bend at the idler pulley was the issue but the JD belts seemed to have solved the problem.

A notched belt will give more traction on a smaller pulley and will run cooler-- as told to me by the Gates people.I don't recall the exact size of their idea of small, but i think it was anything below 5 inch diameter.
