long510

New User
purchased a long 510 that has been sitting for six years, got it started it has a knock shut it off. any advice

Try to sell it to a guy who doesn't know anything about tractors. If he mentions the knock, just tell him it needs a new muffler.

the Long 510 is a rebadged UTB/Universal built in Brasov, Romania
UTB's were mostly FIAT designs built by Universal under lisence from FIAT
sorta of like Lada's
not easy to find parts as long is no more and UTB is no more as well IIRC
I worked for a guy that had a UTB 640 IIRC and it always had a knock in the motor
wasn't a bad tractor but the quality is not there
he shipped it out to another property that doesn't do much tractor work about 50 hrs a yr and is
still banging n knocking but going
when it left here it had about 1250 hrs on it and it was taken to the dealer (now out of bussiness he
retired when UTB shutdown) yearly for routine service
and it never failed to need a major repair every time it went in
both front drive assemblies were done
the trans got locked between 1 n 2 all the time he quoted 5000 to fix that was fine if you didn't use
1st gear plus constent charging problems and electrical gremlems
I replaced it with an old cockshutt from the 60's that's only had had oil and antifreeze in 5 yrs now
that we bought for 500 bucks
as to your knocking noise I would say it's the lifters as that's what it sounded like on the one we
had but it also sorta sounded like a piston rattle or pinging when the timing was too far advanced on
a gas motor
I agree sell it if you can find someone to buy it or just run it till its done wear ear plugs

The Fiat built Longs,AC and Olivers are probably the easiest tractors to find parts for of their age that there is around and also the most reasonably priced.Import Tractor in Canada has
about any part for these tractors an owner would ever need plus several companies in the USA sell the parts as well as ebay is full of them.I have an Oliver Fiat built 1450 4WD 1967 Model and Import
Tractor even has the 4WD parts for it.Try to find US built 4WD parts from the 60's sometimes.Anyone thats takes a couple minutes on the internet can find parts easily.

Depends on the type of knock could be a piece of loose carbon in a cylinder or it could be a rod knock and that's why it sat for six years. What did the person you bought it from
say about it?Of course that might not be exactly the truth for sure it might give you some idea.Sounds like you'll be needing to pull the head though.Import Tractor as well as several other companies have manuals and parts. Those are real nice handy tractors once you get it running. How many hours is it showing on the meter? Are you used to hearing diesel engines run,as those motors have a 'knock' compared to gas motors anyway.

fiat built tractors yes
the UTB's were a fiat design lisecned to UTB to use or better yet copy and are in no way the same
look simalar is abut the only in common and the long 510 was built by UTB
some of the other long tractors were built by fiat and some Landinis probably others as well
after long was bought out the Long name was dropped in favor of the Farmtrac brand that is no more as well
would you use lada parts to fix your fiat 124 as thats what it was based off of
how many of the 20 plus million ladas built do you see on the rd
they just don't last and weren't built too either
same with the UTB
at least china (land of almost right) are close to the original parts
the russians make them their own way to their specs
like your oliver my 69 cockshutt 1450 is a fiat built tractor and side by side you can see the quality in it over the UTB
where I am the local dealer for them was only 5 miles from me
by his own admission said they weren't built that well and I know of about 40 of them sitting in farm lots that never move
and the 3 I've seen running at local auctions are hard to get bids ans only get 300 - 400 bucks for them if they sell at all
I liked running the UTB had good power and did everything we needed it to do
but was a nightmare to locate parts and when you did took a while to get them
and yes I bought some parts from Import Tractor as well as I still service it
our reason for replacement was based on that
but remember the boss still has it only gets used about 50 hrs a yr now over the 200 hrs a yr here

Those 1450 Oliver/Cockshutts were built in Romania,as were the 1250A and the 1255 same tractor as the AC 5040.The 1265 and 1365 Olivers were built by Fiat directly as was the 5050 AC and parts from the AC 5050 and Oliver 1265 tractors are interchangable with the Romanian built Long 460 same tractors.Look at the parts that are listed at the various suppliers Long,AC and Oliver parts are all grouped together which means they are using identical parts.Ironically the worst of the Fiat tractors were built by Fiat the Oliver 1250 4 cylinders gas and diesel both poor quality engines then Oliver went with the UTB/Fiat design.Same engine and rear designs are being sold today in some Fiat owned New Holland tractors.I swap parts off Long,AC and Oliver
tractors all the time BTW.Same starter will fit the 3 and 4 cylinder Longs,MM,Olivers and AC Fiat built tractors, have a steering assembly off an Oliver 1365 on my Long 460.Getting ready to
put a front end off a UTB 550 on my 2WD Oliver 1365 because its a lot heavier built front end than the Oliver came with.

First off before you do anything, talk to the folks at Import Tractor. They will tell you what the parts situation for that model is and probably help you out on the knock. Then decide what course of action to take. And just for the record it isn't just the Longs that had tranny issues. Every 1355/65 we sold eventually started jumping out of gear, and the last two Hesston/Fiats I saw at auctions had tranny issues, also. I know I am in the minority, but I was never enamored with any of the fiats of that era, no matter who built them. Always figured Oliver would have been way further ahead to have remodeled and updated the 550.
