Aug6 is a mecum auction near joliet il. Already a lot of older tractors there. Anybody bought at a mecum? What is your opinion, good, bad, ugly? The local fairgrounds has a consignment auction aug 20, have bought from threre and have been satisfied. Never been to a mecum auction.

Sure, why not. I bought an old Rolls Royce at a Mecum about 10 years ago for less than $30k and sold it recently for over $40k after enjoying it for many years and having fun working on it and driving it. Point being there are many folks that will say "oh I would never buy a vehicle at one of those auctions you will just pay too much" but the counter to that is you will get to see a lot of tractors or cars or whatever and it will be fun (and you don't HAVE To buy anything). Many times you can pick up a hot rod or tractor or vintage truck for much less than the owner has invested, and who cares about the overpriced Ferraris and Porsches anyway.

I went last year when it was in Harrisburg. If you also like old cars it's worth the admission cost, though bidding fee is higher than looking fee. I didn't watch the tractors last year, but I watched several hours of the cars and was surprised how high stuff I thought was just "okay" was bidding for, but folks weren't selling. I'm no master, but I do judge for AACA so I have a decent handle on condition evaluation. I didn't go this year, but I heard it was the reverse, guess last years folks took a year to figure out their value. The tractors last year did look really nice. My neighbor got two and has been happy with them. Like anything else. If you're happy and the seller is happy your both probably got a good deal, or at least a good experience.

Never bought anything from them.

However, they spent A LOT of coin at the WI Farm Technology Days. They had a nice display, (a beautiful 4320 there that would look good in my shed), and several people on hand. After a 2 minute survey, my 12 year old son and I both got a Mecum shopping bag with pens, sunglasses, t shirts, sale bills, note pads, etc.

I was kinda curious what kind of commission they charge?

I have been to hundreds of auctions in my time and can spot "fun and games" pretty quickly. The "fun" runs rampant at their sales. Enter at your own risk. Mike

Last spring at Davenport,Ia. Seller commission 5 percent with no reserve, 7 percent with a reserve. Buyer commission 5 percent. Also seller is charged $100 to enter auction or $300 if you wanted to have your tractor put in the paper catalog.

That's what drives me nuts. Fifty people jammed around an item so you can't get close to it, and maybe three or four at the most serious about bidding.
