I have been advised to use "10 weight" motor oil in my 1950 John Deere A "powrtrol"..... may be hard to find. Is this right ?

No.

Reviewed the [b:654c4848f0]OPERATOR'S MANUAL No. OM-R2001R JOHN DEERE MODEL "A" SERIES (SERIAL No. 584000 to 647999) TRACTOR[/b:654c4848f0] under the [b:654c4848f0]60-HOUR SERVICE[/b:654c4848f0] section under the [b:654c4848f0]Checking Power Lift or Powr-Trol Oil Level[/b:654c4848f0] topic in the first paragraph on page 26.

"[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]Check the oil level, if necessary, add S.A.E. 30 oil at the filler opening until it runs out at the oil level opening.[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]"

There was no such thing as "Hygard" or "hydraulic fluid" when the A was new, so they used what was available.

You can still use 30 weight engine oil if you want but if you are sharing hydraulic implements with other tractors, you probably should use Hygard, or whatever you use in the other tractors.
