There, now---that's much better!

I finally got around to changing out the seat on my recently-acquired Ford 4000. That blue contraption was unusable: it moved me too close to the steering wheel, my butt would slide downhill, and it was hard to raise my legs to reach the pedals. So I robbed the old pan seat off of my 8N, and after a few presidential modifications, it works well. Now I enjoy using my tractor.

Want to really enjoy it? Add some sort of lumbar support. Made all the difference on my Farmall. To this day I always go "Ahhh" every time I sit down.

Jerry, Right there w/ you. The seat on my 1020 broke so I picked up a spring mounted replacement. Unfortunately the spring rating was too great for my boney a** so it put my knees in the steering wheel or I was so far back I couldn't work the pedals. Ended up putting the new pan, back, and arms onto the original mount and all is better.

I have the same seat on my FE35. I added a short block of 2x4 to the front between the seat and spring to give it a backwards tilt. TDF

We had the same thing on our 5000. It was a "spring ride" type of thing that could be adjustable to the person's weight. It was so close to the steering wheel that it was only usable in the "flipped up" position (I think only meant for getting on and off the tractor) which gave it a slanted down position also. I welded on a 3" extension onto the mount so it could be moved back to a civil position. Works great now.

Hey fbh44 I've been looking at adding some sort of backrest for my 450.. My back complains more and more about the uneven pan seat and there's really nowhere to lean but forward. What did you do? Happen to have any pictures??

I don't understand your problem. I had that same blue seat on a 65 Ford 4100,(4000) 68 Ford 4100 (4000) and 68 Ford 5100 (5000) and never had a problem like that with any of them and more comfortable than the pan seat that I have had many of them.

Understand your pain, I'm 6'3" and my hind end is bigger than I care to admit.

I think every tractor I have I've scooted the seat back, usually with a piece of 4" x 1/2" flat stock steel drilled and tapped in the appropriate spots.

The worst was my Grandpas 64 4000 with the 2 stage clutch, hated using that tractor till the seat got moved and power steering added...much better now.

I really like it, Larry. I feel lucky to have found such a solid tractor for the price I paid. It will easily outlast me.

I adjusted everything I could, but problem is, there's no apparent way to adjust it enough to
do any good. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but.....
