How universal were old loaders?

My dad and I just started getting into a little farming project this year. We picked up a Massey 135 that came with a loader uninstalled. Really we aren't interested in putting it on the Massey. I just picked up a non-running International 240 utility. The intent is to use it a year or two and then sell it for profit to buy a bigger tractor, but I got to thinking, if the loader fits then it would be a nice cheap true utility piece. It has side cultivator hydraulics for easy hookup. Were the loaders fairly universal, or did every make and model have it's own mounting points that would require fabrication, or at the very least, drilling? Thanks!

Loaders are most certainly NOT universal, especially across brands. Even within a brand, loader mounting is different from series to series.

Stranger things have happened but the odds of even a single bolt hole lining up in the right place for that Massey loader on your International tractor are pretty slim. You will need to modify the mounting brackets or fabricate adapters somehow, if you want to make it fit.

Does the 240 have power steering? IF not, you will regret putting a loader on it. So maybe Plan A would be the best idea at this stage.

Thanks, that's sorta what I expected since they couldn't even make a standard hitch system, but figured I'd ask before looking at the parts
too closely.

Yep,I put one off a Ferguson 30 on a 1020 Deere. I don't know what that old pipe loader was that a neighbor put on a David Brown 885,but they cut the pipes on an angle and welded some plates to them to bolt to the tractor. It came out looking pretty good. A torch,a welder and some imagination sometimes.

It helps to see it on a tractor so you can measure here and there. Any loader can fit with enough mods but obviously you want to hack as little as possible. One thing, many aftermarket loaders were the same loader with certain key parts besides the brackets altered to fit. As long as its from one utility tractor of a similar size to another, and not from a big row crop to a small utility, etc. I have used the same loader on 3 different tractors so far with only mods to the mounting brackets and hoses.

Actually, loaders are universal, but the mountings are not. You could mount a John Deere #45 loader on a Farmall M or H, but you needed the correct mounting hardware which was also available from John Deere. Likewise, you could mount the same model of Stan-Hoist loader on a Massey, Ford, John Deere, Farmall, etc., etc., if you had the correct mounting hardware, which was available from Stan-Hoist.

Years ago, we put a Ford loader on a MF 135. This was in the early 70's, both the tractor and the loader were about 10 years old. Had to fab a mounting plate at the front, it was just a flat steel plate bolted across the front. The loader frame actually fit at the rear axles, and the length was exact to tie into the steel plate. It was surprising how well it fit, would have looked factory if we would have painted it to match the tractor.

A better question might be to ask if anybody has installed your particular loader on your particular tractor. As somebody said, knowing it will fit and being able to look at how they did it would help a lot. I ended up paying quite a bit more when looking for a loader since I am NOT handy with a torch and wanted one that came off of a very similar tractor. I passed up several that folks here said could be made to work and waited (and payed more) for one with the correct brackets for my particular tractor.
