Farmall Super M rear axle seal

I am replacing the rear axle seals in my 1953 farmall super m and I was curious if you guys soak the felt sealing washer that goes outside of the axle seal in oil or if you guys install that dry or with a lite oil coating

Since no one else chimed in,

It's been a while since I did a rear axle and right now I can't remember but on engines I usually oil the inside of the felt so the pulley can turn in it. I figure if it's dry it will wear out faster.

I've never really read what's best and they always come out soaked but soaking them from the start doesn't seem right to me.

I guess take your pick.

Quite frankly, I throw the felt away. If your new seal has the double lip, a felt will keep that lip from doing it's job of keeping dirt out. I did oil them before double lip seals were used. Incidentally, the 560 didn't use a felt and the cap was thinner. First one we sold, customer hauled it himself and had to push wheels in very close. Could not keep them tight. Finally dawned on someone, not me, being the cap was thinner, the wheel was contacting the part of the key way in axle where it tapered up and the key was riding up on it.

Thank you guys for the quick replies I appreciate the help. I've been told both ways so I was just looking for some input and I appreciate yalls know how! Thanks!
