I posted a couple of months ago about a sore shoulder, got cortisone shot, but not coming around.

I am going to bite the bullet and schedule MRI.

I have been doing exercises for the last 5 years for shoulder pain.
have more range of motion and more strength sometimes less pain
took SWMBO to doc yesterday and he recommended physical therapy for 3 months then if not better MRI
GOOD LUCK
Ron

I hope you are not as claustrophobic as I turned out to be... have had several MRIs for leg issues, but going in the tube head first and trying to lay your bad shoulder flat makes your other shoulder rub on the top of the tube. Felt like getting stuck, then just went haywire, pulse and breathing shot up, sweating, etc. Had to pull me out for a few minutes. Even the second stint was hairy. I have never been adventurous to crawl inside stuff anyway, but this even surprised me. Makes the thought of crawling inside a plugged silo unloader breathing from a shop vac totally impossible!

I can feel your pain. I had my left shoulder rotator cuff repaired back in 2012.
Went through every step of therpy , step by step to the tee. Everything worked out perfect.
My right shoulder also had a torn cuff at the time but, put that off decided to do one at a time.
Well long story short, and due to other issues, I never did my right shoulder. Now, my left has just started hurting again in the last week. Just wonderful.....oh well...

Go to Wal-Mart, 6 oz of castor oil. Rub it all over upper body. Let it soak in. Only side effects is if you drink it. It works for my sore mussles
It also works for my sister, daughter, and friend.

Try it and let me know if you get relief.

I'm betting you are thinking I'm full of it. Just try it.

I can't even begin to stress enough what exercise will do for shoulder pain, knee pain, you name it. Strengthen the muscles around the joint and it makes all the difference in the world.

Everyone heals different. I tore my rotor cuff a year or so ago. It was really hurting. I actually heard it tear. I did the MRI. I was in so much pain in the tube from being in one position
for so long. Just about the time I thought I was going to squeeze the panic bulb It was over. The doctor started me on therapy . Each time I left therapy it hurt worse. I finally stopped going. Now I can use it like before, almost no pain. I should have it fixed, but I hav two hip joints to be replaced first. Waiting for my mowing season to be over to do the hips.Stan

I have been dealing with shoulder painit since New Years Eve. I fell on it, finally got in to see a good doctor, had the MRI and it showed two torn tendons. He gave me three choices, I can do nothing, have cortisone shots or surgery. Non of which will give full range of motion. In the mean time I was at a farm show and a fellow gave a bottle of Udder Comfort cream, said had had the same injury as me and he used this and excercised the shoulder and it is good as new now.
I can say this, it does take the pain away. Every night I massage this cream in and take a couple ibuprofen and it does not hurt. Oh sure it still hurts mow and then but it is getting better. Might an alternative for you

An old school massage therapists used it on me. It cost $30 for a 30 minute rub. When she done it I thought she was full of it too. I just wasted $30 and 30 minutes. She said don't was it off. Let is stay over night. That's when I decided she put herself out of business by telling me what she used, castor oil. She said that is what they trained her back in the day. She is in her 70's, old school tech.

Don't use other brands, they smell like rotten meat.

As rrlund said, exercise. Use it as much as you can even if it hurts. Mine is a full thickness tear with retraction. I have full range of motion. The only thing is I have trouble lifting something with my arm extended out in front of my body. I have almost no pain.

shoulder injuries are very tough.
gotta rest it...easier said than done. Weeks of being careful can be undone in an instant by just reaching for a beer on a high shelf
that is slightly behind you........
I've had a few severe shoulder injuries. First stage, belted my upper arm tight to my side. After some healing, I tethered my elbow to my belt with a foot long cord.
No way to cheat, no mistakes....that arm will stay close!
Yes, it's a bother in the shop.
But people function every day with far worse problems.
The tether will keep that arm in and you will adapt and figure out how to get your work done with it.
good luck.

ps...even though medical people will try to bulldog you...it's really simple if you don't like a test. Just say no.

(quoted from post at 17:03:39 05/12/16) I can't even begin to stress enough what exercise will do for shoulder pain, knee pain, you name it. Strengthen the muscles around the joint and it makes all the difference in the world.

Thanks Randy, I just got up off the couch and exercised it. I have had both repaired. The left was more recent at maybe 18 years ago and the job extended from the projected one and a half to three hours. It had gotten to hurting and I had an MRI but the doc said it is something like rotator cuff itis. He told me that I needed therapy so I have been doing the exercises when I think of it and it seems better after. I just need to be reminded more often. Do they give exercise reminders on Talers?

Did the first one a couple years ago and went to the point couldn't lift arm or open a car door. Was unsure but after a year it's a world of difference. Last December heard a pop lifting boxes just about went to my knees but got going again fought the pain but finally went to doc. As per usual they stuck me in therapy it did straightened out the pulled muscle in the back and neck but shoulder was still bad. Did all the exercises finally they did m.r.i it showed full tear off the bone . It seems to me if something is tore working it ain't going to make it grow together. Know a person that his shoulder didn't get better his range of motion is bad and his strength is poor even has a hard time getting his coat on.
They said options are therapy but again it's not going to go together. Next was cortisone that will take away the pain and the problem with that is you won't feel pain and might push harder and do more damage to something else.
Next option is do nothing and other muscles will take over your range of motion will be limited and naturally if you don't have full use you won't have full strength.
And last surgery and the last one took a year to recover.
Right now can't sleep extremely painful on all of the arm and a lot of weakness. The doctor said if I want to stay working I got to do it.
There is other things the found on the m.r.i degenerative bone disease bone spurs (they ground them off last time) bicep tear (they cut and screwed it back on last time) and the full split . the last time it was partial this time it's a full split and inch apart so the longer I wait the harder it will be to get together.
Not looking forward to sleeping in the recliner nor the therapy nor 4 months not working but I know it's the best option for me.
Each one is different don't be afraid to ask questions and look up things on line. For me the m.r.i tunnel wasn't bad unfortunately she strapped me down on the bad side I barely made it through with out screaming and this time I was fortunate not to have a dye shot in the shoulder that was really bad . The sad thing it was all preventable a guy was in a hurry to get a cigarette and tossed on boxes he wasn't supposed to and the belt was overloaded anyways because a idiot in charge wasn't doing his job right and the best the safety stop wasn't working. I love working in factories.

To add to the stories:

A couple of years ago, my left shoulder started hurting after a week of dog-sitting for my daughter and walking 4 high-energy (pulling) dogs at one time. Couldn't sleep on it and it would make a pop noise when I moved it upward. Doc looked at it and we decided to see if it improved. It slowly got better so it didn't hurt all the time but I couldn't sleep on it and my range of motion and strength had diminished. Last year, I had x-rays, an MRI done and visited a surgeon. He said that there were no current tears or tendon damage but I had osteoarthritis in it. Also had "goat's beard" deposits on it. Both probably from a combination of the injury and just plain getting old. Surgeon gave me a list of options from "do nothing, take Advil for pain" to complete shoulder replacement (likely a year of recovery with no guarantee of improvement). He said shoulders don't seem to do as well as hips or knees with replacements. I opted for the "do nothing" approach. At 65, I didn't want to waste a year of my life trying to recover.

Since then, I exercise it to improve strength and range of motion. I don't baby it or let it limit what I do. It's still not perfect but it's getting a lot better. I only have to take Advil after I've used it real hard doing projects or chores. It does hurt if I bang my arm or elbow on something and I can't work in tight places with it. Have to use my other arm. But hey, I'm over 65 and can still walk, ski, climb ladders, do projects which is more than a lot of people my age can do. So I'm thankful for what I have in the way of health.

About 3 years ago I got pains in my right shoulder and couldn't put my right arm up over my head...It hurt when using it and it was often hard to sleep at night....I didn't go to the doctor....This year its gradually went away.....Whats funny is that I noticed an improvement after I got an allergy shot..

The shoulder joint has the greatest range of motion out of all other joints in our body, which is why it is the joint most prone to injury. When doing activities that heavily involve the use of your arms and shoulders, it puts a lot of strain on the shallow joint. Try to immobilize as much as possible. To help speed up your healing, without surgery, look into any treatment that increases the circulation to the treated area (i.e. massage therapy, acupuncture, BFST, ultra-sound). Our bodies have a natural ability to heal by bringing any injured area blood flow, however, the rate at which it does so is very slow. Increasing the circulation increases the amount of nutrients and oxygen and thus helps you heal at an accelerated rate. The increased blood flow also lubricates the area, helping prevent further damage during movements, which is important especially for the shoulder. I recommend this treatment, it's done me good with numerous injuries.
