John Deere A

No, it does not just pull out the back of the tractor.
You have remove the PTO shaft cover and then remove the complete rock shaft housing so you can remove a snap ring on the forward end of the shaft.

Ok and thanks!I bought this "A" recently and the previous owner told me that the PTO did not work; so I knew this. He also said he thought that they "unhook it" somehow because previously it was a "pulling tractor". It may just be broken on the inside. Are you familiar with this? Can I go through the top? Thank you !

Does "pulling tractor" mean:
1. the tractor is specially modified for tractor pulling contests
or
2. the PTO is broken, so now the tractor can only be used to pull things around?

This is why I left this site a year ago - looking for good info from good people and I get "smart nnalert"....nice !

No, you cannot go in from the top. The rear cover will need to be removed to see what you're missing.

The rear portion of the shaft does come out the back -AFTER- you remove the snap ring that I mentioned.

After you remove the rockshaft housing you'll be able to see the rest of the shaft assembly and determine if anything is broken or missing.

Go to jdparts.com and look at PC-675, page 90 to see the entire PTO assembly.

Don't be quick to pass judgment, I thought the answer's given were in line.
Without a book or manual or a illustration of the PTO it's rather hard to picture
it's assemble. There is a couple if my memory serves me correctly between the
drive & driven shafts. My assumption is some had a flat back light weight housing
on the rear of this tractor & they just reinstalled a complete rockshaft housing
& left out the couple. There isn't a way of finding out until you look. The lever
in the trans case that attaches to the shift linkage link can be viewed from the top
if the shift tower is removed & the tranny drained. This way you can make sure the linkage
is connected. If it's shifts in & out then the only answer is to remove the rear housing
& that is Very heavy!! Good luck with it...

The question from ss55 was a legitimate question - not a smart reply.
If your skin is that thin, maybe you should leave this forum.
I was thinking the same thing about whether it was for pulling contests or just for moving other equipment.
You might want to think about getting that chip off your shoulder.

Yes you can look from the top to see if the LINKAGE is MOVING the BEVEL PTO GEARS..
If the Shift fork isn't Hooked up to the sliding gear the PTO won't work....If all of
that moves as it should, I said the only way to fix is remove the rockshaft... You can see
if the linkage works once the tranny is drained.. I replace the shift fork on the PTO
Last week on a A & removing the rockshaft house would have been a total waste of time to do this.
