John Deere 2020

To Texas Jim - I did an engine over haul on my JD 2020 - the head, new valves, new valve guides, and a New JD head gasket.
The head was shaved and the block was super clean. I am getting an oil leak on the back of the engine - a real small drip and it would be back of the fuel filter side. Is it possible I have the head gasket upside down or would it even work if it was upside down?? The head bolts are torched to 110 and I have no water in the radiator. Thank God.

Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks - Art

Yes IIRC head gasket will fit upside down. Maybe one of the "real technicians" will respond as it's been many yrs since I was a dealer SM and I have no tech manual to check for info. Are you positive valve cover gasket isn't leaking?

Why are you running it without water in the rad.??? Not a real good idea unless just to see if it will start and then shut it off.

The area you describe the leak is in the vicinity of the oil port to the rocker arm shaft.
About a year ago a friend of mine called me to help him with ignition issues on an engine he had just put back together and once we got the ignition timing right it started.......and poured oil off the back side of the head. It turned out that the aftermarket head gasket was not punched for the oil passage to the head.
I wonder if this is your issue or is it possible that the port got plugged with some debris when it was being worked on. I am not sure from memory exactly the path up through the head that the oil takes other than it goes up through the one rockershaft mount. If ou took it off maybe try some compressed air to see if it would clear?
A note to Tx Jim: you ARE areal mechanic....in my book thats better than a tech!

Thanks for compliment but older age & nerve damage has curtailed a lot of things I once attempted.
