Conversion of alternator to tach drive

Besides obviously changing the pulley to the correct size. Has anyone added one of those gear kits to the back of an originally "non-
tach" drive Delco alternator? If so how is the drive gear supplied in the kit attached to the back of the alternator rotor shaft? Hole
drilled and tapped or what?

I've never done it, but I believe there needs to be a 3/8-16 hole drilled and tapped in the end of the rotor shaft, and the closed end bearing changed to an open type.

The hole would need to be drilled and tapped in a lathe to keep it straight and centered.

I can't imagine that you could rework the shaft to accept the gear. There also needs to be three threaded screw holes in the back of the alternator. AC used that system on quite a few tractors- 170-180-190, etc. There's got to be some out there you could find to use.

OK, I must have something wrong here. It looks like Delco but already has an open end bearing. I'be seen these kits (6X10299TD) attached to the back of alternators that don't have the pads for screw holes. Just 2 holes tapped into the case.

FWIW, just bought a complete kit for a Ford conversion, brackets, alternator, some wiring off of ebay for $125 delivered.

I had thought about trying my own conversion like you are, but for that price...

Search ebay for AKT0005

Looks OK, but haven't installed it yet, waiting for the day when the vreg or genny dies 1 of my 2 non-converted Fords

Not the question, but could you use one of the Delco alternators with the tach spade on it and make an electrical one work somehow?

In above link is a description on how to do the 10si alternator.
Good luck.

Didn't old Corvettes run a tack off the back of a generator too. And if so maybe later on their alternators did ? Might be another source to check as those car guys want everything as it was originally.

I am with Fred, just put one on for a fellow on late model 3000 Ford gas tractor, just bought the kit works great I am sure they have kits for other applications.
