Ford 600 timing

My Ford 600 started missing badly. When I check the timing it does't stay consistent. The timing mark jumps all around with at least 10 degrees variation. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

roken spring(s), worn, rusty, dirty, parts of the centrifugal advance mechanism. Does it settle down at wide open speed or still jump around?

Hello 1975ford,

My guess would be broken mechanical advance spring or sticky weights,

Guido.

Check the distributor shaft bushing for wear. Needs to be very little side play. This will affect the point gap. If worn the gap can not be set, which will cause the timing to vary.

Also check for excessive end play, the shaft may be jumping up and down at idle, causing the helical gear to move the timing slightly.

The centrifugal advance should turn smooth and easy a few degrees, (same direction as shaft rotation), and spring back when released.

The engine smoothes out at higher speeds but I haven't checked the timing at higher rpms. Will check out your suggestion.
