Electronic hour meter keeps resetting, not back to zero

Not exactly an antique, but this seems like a good place to ask.

My dad just bought a used JD 6675 skid steer. Seems like a decent machine, it was showing only something like 811.1 hours when he bought it. After running it for a bit, the hourmeter goes up as it should, but he realized next time he started it that it was back down to 811.1.

How can this even happen? And can it be fixed without a new display?

I really don't know if this bothers him too much or at all, but I'm really curious about the whole situation. I could see it going back to zero somehow but a specific hour like that?

Thanks!
Brandon

The elapsed time is stored in non-volatile memory, in case power is lost to the meter. I'm guessing there are three connections to the meter: battery +12V, ground, and switched 12 volts. Maybe there's a problem with the battery +12V. Does the display stay on with the switch off?

Sounds to me like some bright boy that knows how to roll back electronic hour meters has messed with this unit. And while it shows some time on the clock , the unexpected result of not accumulateing more hours has occurred.

Yup, the new value is not being stored in non-volatile memory when the machine is shut down.

If the machine is new enough, that would be the main computer, and replacing the meter won't make a bit of difference. The meter is just a display, showing what the main computer tells it to show when it receives power.

Well the good news, when he decides to sell it in 10 years, it will be very low hours... 811.11 hours.... LOL. Now the real question, how many actual hours does it already have???? likely thousands...

Hello Weirddeere,

It may be that the computer was somehow damaged and stuck on that number? How about just removing one of the battery cables, leave it off for a minute. Then hoop it back up, who know......You might get lucky!
