John Deere 70 gas

just got bad news today cylinder head cracked was that common on the 70 gas tractors? not sure if its worth looking for a different head or not? thanks for any thoughts kind of bummed Thanks Howard

It must be common enough, My 70 gas was cracked between the valves. I had it pinned, but now its leaking at the head gasket. He said he had to take about 20 thousands off of it to get it flat it was warped so bad, so I'm sure i need to get the block surfaced too because they were warped together, so with one flat it makes it even worse and leaks into the crankcase and externally. Of course thats been about 5 years ago and its been sitting ever since because of time.

You might consider determining if the cost to repair your tractor will be recouped by its' use/utility in your operation.

Our 4 Model 70s are the "heart" of our hay operation.

One of our 1953 Model 70 gas tractors had a cracked head and antifreeze was leaking into the crankcase.

Replaced the head and head gasket and it has paid for itself over the years.

Hope this helps.

I just spent $1000+ on my Farmall, but as I told wife I've had it 30 years, it's my favorite, does everything I want, and the actual cost works out to $35 a year, a real bargain. PLUS! Now she's in tip top condition for the next 35 years.

Not prone to cracking or warping unless over torqued, over heated or frozen.
