Voltage regulator getting hot.

Got an 930 ck 1964 i am restoring, have it wired just like the the schematics and just like neighbors but the battery wire and the load wire still get really hot fast just where they hook up to Voltage regulator, then when start the tractor the generator and VR will get hot just like that. was thinking on beefing up ground wire but hate to change anything as this tractor is still pretty much original and in great shape. any suggestions let me know as new to this.

I think you have a short to ground in the lighting circuit. With the lights shut off, and the regulator disconnected from the L and Bat wires, (protect them from touching ground when off their terminals) put an ohm meter from ground to the L wire. it should read infinity. (on conduction) if it reads very few ohms (high conduction) there is a short to ground in that wire. Jim

What do you mean battery and load the batt lead from the batt goes to the terminal on the reg marked batt. What do you mean "load" where does that wire come from and does it have voltage when read with a meter. Only lead with voltaage hooking to the reg would be batt volts that wire goes to batt on the reg.

Many Delco voltage regulators 50s into the 60s, on various brands of equipment, have a L terminal with a 10ga. wire that goes directly to the lights and accessory loads. While the Bat wire goes to the amp gauge, then to the battery. It was thought that the direct wire to the load had less drop in it than the single heavy wire. Jim
