Cool pic and road trip?

Skyline Drive in the 40's I think.

Travel question. Heading west from Virginia in a few weeks and want to stop somewhere between Toledo, Ohio and South Bend, Indiana to break up the trip. New part of the country for me, any suggestions on where to stay, any towns that you would recommend for a stopover? Any towns you would avoid? I am not a city guy and prefer small towns.
Thanks,
Heyseed

Van Wert Ohio at the intersection of US 30 and US 127,Comfort Inn has a pool. There's a great place to eat on Main Street. A small local place called Balyeat's. Best home cooking you'll ever have anywhere in your life. I highly recommend the chicken dinner or the meatloaf.

Nice quiet little town. Anything to do would depend on just when you're going to be there. The first weekend in August,at the fairgrounds, there are a lot of vendors set up for the 127 Yard Sale along with a big Bar-B-Q competition.

Just take the 127 exit off 30 and turn south. Comfort Inn is just a block or so down. They have a hot tub too. Super nice clean place and not overpriced either.
Main street is part of the old Lincoln Highway and it's rumored that celebrities used to stop in at Balyeat's when passing through. Turn east off 127 on Main Street. It's about a half a block east of the Court House on the north side of the street. Has a neon sign hanging out front.

The US 127 yard sale is going to be a challenge in Van Wert this year, especially in the vicinity of the fairground. The road's closed for reconstruction there all summer so you have to take side streets to get to the fairground. Regarding Balyeats, Dale Davis was an owner for 50 years and worked there 20 years previously, 70 years total, starting at age 14 and retiring at 84! Not much has changed otherwise in its 90 years. It's a good place to stop if you're passing through.

Dale has come right to our table before and told my wife how to make the chicken. As much as she tries, she comes close but can't quite get there. Maybe it's the gravy. Reminds me of turkey gravy on Thanksgiving.
Thanks for the tip on 127 by the fairgrounds. Can you go out west by the Pizza Hut and what not and circle around to the fairgrounds from the south side?
I honestly don't know if we'll go through Van Wert this year or not. I'll take 30 to 75 going down. We're going to stay in Byrdstown Tennessee for most of it. Several times now,I've skipped northern Ky to get up in to Ohio on Sunday morning to get to the Dark County Steam Threshers grounds before the vendors start packing up,but if it's not raining on Sunday morning,I might just do northern Ky this year instead, then take 75 back up to 30 to come home.

If you talking big road being the Indiana Toll Road there is a lot construction with backups starting in between Elkhart and South Bend and west of there with backups both directions..

Regarding Balyeat's, there used to be a waitress there named Lucy Bartz. She immigrated to the U.S. by herself soon after WW II from Germany. She worked there all those years until more recently and has passed. She had an AMAZING memory! There could be 8 people in a group when she took their orders-- and never wrote anything down! When bringing the food she knew who got what. Regarding getting into the fairground you could circle around and enter from the south side-- but you could also go east (on Ervin) from Pizza Hut about 4 blocks and enter the fairground from the north side. There's usually a sign where to turn from Ervin.

Agree on Shipshewana. The flea market is huge. Only open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It closes around Oct 1. Google it, Amish country. Traffic can be a long line. I know the short cut, go in the back way. geo.
