Used/Junk Tire Dealers

I have a tractor with loader that I have constantly had problems with flats on the front (7.50 16 tri ribs). Last weekend I fixed one of the fronts 3 times and was going down again when I stopped for the day. So I decided I will try some heavy truck tires on the front, and thought I would visit a few tire dealers/shops to see if I could pick up a pair that had been removed and I might get lucky and find a set either cheap or free. I figure most if not all shops charge a "disposal fee", and I think the state also charges a fee to dispose, and I know some shops are happy to get rid of them without paying to dispose. The first two shops had none in the size I was looking for, then the 3rd shop had a pair that "might work". When I asked price it was $35 mounted or $25 out the door (I should have asked if he included a warranty :)) . Now, I can understand the charge to mount, but $50/pair for what amounts to junk tires that someone already paid to dispose of? And my guess is he would be saving on paying to dispose of them anyhow? I passed and went on across town and found a shop that gave me a set. I certainly know which shop to visit when I go to shop for tires. Seems to be a pretty good racket if you can make money selling new tires, make money on the used take off junk tires, and save on disposal, or am I missing something here? Seems as if the worst shops to deal with are the ones with the cushy lounges where you wait while your care is in their shops, and always the sign prohibiting you from entering their air conditioned shop. I always have better luck dealing with the guy with the huge tire pile in the back and if you are lucky there is an old bus seat off to the side you can sit on while you wait.

How would he know you were not going to put those tires on your pickup? His shop, his rules.

how do you expect them to pay for the building, insurance, lights, heat, tools, and their wages of they don't get paid?

Same here where I live. I went to a tire shop to get a 15 inch tire for my chipper. I told the first shop I needed a tire. All I wanted it to do is hold air. No deal. The next shop said, I don't think we have that size tire. The third shop said for 10.00 I can have one. I said how about 5.00. I finally got my tire, which they already have collected a disposal fee from the other guy. Another time, I needed a 16 inch tire for the front of my JD, so I could complete my mowing. All they had was a studded tire in my size, which they would have never sold in southern California. I didn't have time to shop around so I think I paid him 25.00 for the tire. I think the used tire shops should be held to a higher standard, as most tires are old beyond safety standards. Stan

There is a place in town that all they do is sell used tires. Most come from junk yards in MI. they have people there constantly.

He has something that you want. He is in business to sell things to people that want them. Sounds like simple good business to me.

I sort of agree, they are in busness to make money not give stuff out for free, and maybe that was the charge for their time.

They way things are going it won't be long before NO ONE will give or even sell used tires due to liability reasons.

How do you know there was a disposal fee paid on them? If they were taken in on trade towards a new set no disposal fee would have been paid --- looks like you are assuming here. Did there tires have no value to you?

Yep, I got something and you want it ,I'll sell it to you.

Now if I knew you, had done business with you before and knew you were one of the good guys, I might just give you a tire to help you out, knowing you might do business with me again.

Did you in fact look at those tires?? Many tire dealers take in used tires to in fact resale and many pay good $$ for them. Plus many used tires are take off that still have a good bit of life in them. I have worked at tire places on and off over the years and many of the used tires we took off we did in fact resale

You don't know he was paid a disposal fee, he may have thought he could resell those tires so did not collect one. You did not comeback with an "I'll give ya ten" so you wanted FREE tires. And you got them, just had to find the right shop. That does not make him a bad guy. So how much time and fuel did you use to get free tires. That shop had to serve you and you did not even pay for their time. I think your being a little hard on him. jmho....gobble

Interesting comments. I was willing to pay for a pair of tires, just not $50 for 2 questionable tires that were mismatched and going on a tractor doing bush hog duty where they are bound to get thorns, and I think everyone can agree that they would take free when offered. I had basically two requirements.....round and hold air, not much else. There are far too many tire shops cutting up tires and tossing into dumpsters to be paying $50 for what I was looking for. If I was looking for 50% tread to go on my pickup, I might have been given them a look, but could probably at least find matched pair for that price. The area I work in has several tire shops within a few minutes drive so I knew I could cover quite a bit of ground in a short time, and come up with something that would work. I spent probably 20 minutes during my lunch visiting 4 shops, and might have burned half a gallon of fuel, so no big deal either way even if I went home with nothing. Before I would have paid $50 for two questionable tires I would simply have purchased new tri ribs. No, I did not ask the shop about if he in fact charged a disposal fee, but it would be interesting to know if he is collecting a disposal fee then selling those same tires - my guess is that several do though, especially when you see single tires for sale vs. a full set. Not saying the guy is a bad guy, just got my curiosity up. The tires that were given to me one had a visible plug next to the sidewall, and the other a bruised sidewall, which is no big deal on a tractor, as it is highly likely they will have several plugs within a short time. This deal likely helped both of us since I can use them, and saved him paying to dispose or labor to cut them up to put in dumpster, so it was a win-win.

No different than a guy charging to clean out and estate then selling some of the items. It's business. If he wants too much, new, used or junk, don't buy them,

Last time I needed a 15" used tire for my fire wood trailer I headed to town and didnt get 1/2 mile down the road and seen two tires freshly dumped in the ditch. Sopped and sure enough they was G70-15 red striped Good Years, how long has it been since they made those?? I remember having red stripes on my 66 SS Chevelle. They was plenty good for my trailer and now I have a spare.

The shop i deal with sells used tires for around $25 each and will mount for you at an additional charge. Their tires are stored inside and are clean. You walk back and inspect and choose which tire you want. It's a good deal for me. One stop shopping and both parties are happy.

I have had to return one due to it being a bad tire. Swapped for a good one with free mounting to cover my fuel. We have a good relationship

You didn't say how much tread the ones at the third shop had. If they still had legal tread, they were worth something. If they were worn out, you should have been able to get them for the price of mounting them, $10 or $15 each. They may have just not wanted to fool with them, if they were really busy.

In OK, the fee is not on the old tire, it is on each NEW tire sold. It is not to dispose of the specific trade in tire, and goes to the state, NOT the dealer. The fund is to be used for cleaning up old tire dumps and developing recycling processes/uses for used tires.

What he said, in NC the fee goes to the state you are stuck with the exspence storing and hauling them to a tire disposal dump. In my case its a 70 mile round trip I just pay someone to haul them to the tire dump.

Even if you take your old tires with you the seller is required to collect the disposal fee and send it to the department of revenue.
If you play along and registered with the state there are no tire disposal fees at the dump if you don't you have to pay tire disposal fee's at the dump..

Never laid eyes on them, the price scared me off. At $50 (carry out price), I would put that toward two new tires with heavier ply rating. With time/trouble/expense of mount and balance I would not want to put that kind of $$ into a pair of used mismatched tires on anything considering they might give troubles any time - particularly on a pickup. Most of the 10 ply more expensive tires today are about done by the time most people buy new anyhow, or they are causing issues such as slipped belts, balance issues.

all old take off tires that are replaced with new ones have have the fee's paid on them already. the dealers just smile when you leave them tires with decent tread on them they can resell. it pure profit selling them, plus new valve stems and balencing. thats how they make money. sure they can give them away, but hard to find good old honest people. they usually will give you the old bald ones out of the recycle pile though.

the only time i leave tires is when they are totally worn out and not reusable.

Did you check the tubes and rims for issues?? Why would you put junk tires on a loader tractor that you use???

Never said I paid to balance the ones I have......I was referring to if I purchased them for a pickup (hypothetically). I admit I am cheap but not stupid :).

The tractor is not used daily for loader work. I probably use the tractor once a month on average now. If I were using daily for a living I would buy new. The tires I picked up would not work for a daily driven pickup or trailer, but will likely last years on this tractor. The most use it gets is bush hogging during the summer/fall months. My issue is thorns for the most part, and I am putting 10 ply rated tires tubeless, and will likely put slime in them as well. If it were not for the thorns, I might spring for new tri ribs.

Hey, watch your tongue, I'm cheap and stupid. Anything wrong with that?

There is a good bit of demand for any 15 inch tire and I tell the guys in the shop if any 31.5 or bigger come in I will pay 20-30/a piece for them. Lot cheaper then new and less bad words when one gets trashed on a forage wagon.

You could locate the site for good used aircraft tires & rims..they won't have any problem with flats..

Probably 20 to 30 Ply and they look GOOD...( and the rims are New)..
