Response caught me off-guard

After the rains and flooding the past week, my son goes to check on the garden.

He returns and I ask him how the garden was. His reply ...'It's gone'! I ask if there is any part of it we can salvage?

He says "No, it's GONE! Nothing there!".

That is too bad. I know that he had put a fair amount of work into it.

The power of moving water is surprising. About ten years ago we had heavy rains for several days and then got about 5 inches in under two hours. Things flooded all around the place. In one place the county blacktop road got moved about one hundred feet into our field. It looked like you have lifted a section of black top, a few hundred feet long and thirty feet wide, up with a spatula and set it into the field. Most of it did not even have cracks in it.

JD, did the County just Deed it to you as a "new" field road, (lol), or did you make them remove it?

:>P

Sounds like one of my friends gardens. He got it in super late as in maybe 2 week ago if that soon. Then with the rain we have been having it got washed away. But here is the funny part. He wants to do a raised bed sort of thing so he puts the dirt in where he wants it before he puts in the timbers to hold the dirt in place so yep it got washed down the hill where he put the dirt in with nothing there to hold the dirt in place. And what makes it very sad is he will not listen to me when I explain how things need to be done he still does it his way

I had plowed up a new garden area in one of my hay fields for the taters and sweet corn. 100 lbs. of taters and 6 lbs. of sweet corn seed. lost 2/3 of taters and 3/4 of sweet corn.

June 19th, 1983...we had 15 1/2 inches of rain, 12 overnight and 3 1/2 noon the next day. Had purchased our second farm the Fall before, had a 40 acre piece in PIK...was keeping it black. Dug a 4 foot deep ditch along one side in "82, and topsoil washed into the ditch, leaving it half full. On top of the silt was a basketball size rock...it had washed off the field and into the ditch, with the heavy rain. Amazing power of rushing water!

Dr. Walt: We had to remove it yourselves. It was not fun as the ground under it would not dry with the pavement laying on it. So you would be able to get 8-10 feet picked up and then wait for it to dry out some more.

yep , btdt ,,,.in sept 2006 we got 18 inches of rain in 30 hours in harrison co ind ,,.lost the caps off of serveral bridges here while i was county commissioner,. hydraulically removed and seperated the asphalt from the concrete base ,the pavement was no more than 5 yrs old in most cases ,,. a few slabs were found in the fields but most were washed down stream and were never seen again ,. previously in 1997 , a similar flood went thru the county seat at corydon where big indian and little indian join ,,. usually when one floods the other doesn't ,because of the drainage areas are very distant from one another by some 25 miles,,. this time they both hit corydon a hel'in at full bore at the same time , a fellow left a semi trailer parkt along the creek ,. it was a common practice , he and the cops went down to retrieve it in the dark but decided it was already tooo deep and dangerous ,. one of the guys had a rope on the tail end and had it tied off on his 4 wheel drive truck,. he tried to pull it backwards but the brakes were lokt , must a been a load in the trailer ,. when it floated it just about took the truck they cut therope and the trailer floated down to the south bridge where it promptly wedged under the bridge side ways ,, affectively plugging the current of little indian by some 2/3rds or more , and worrying us whether the bridge would hold ,.. in 5 minuts time all of downtown had 2 feet of water or more on the streets and in businesses and homes that were high and dry 5 minutes before , the county office building had 3 feet of water for 6 hours , the courthouse basement flooded 2 foot from the ceilings , but no water got in the 1st floor ,. yes thesec raging floods are horrible ,,.one o these days I would like to ask the man upstairs why some of us get none and then some get too much ,, but I figure if I get to have audience with the Almighty , he wouldhave far more questions about my behavior on this earth ,. so I will keep quiet, at therisk of being turned away asnot being good enuf to keep ,. LOL
