repurpose tires

Had a little cub with bad rear rims and tires, had a good pair of 20" snow tires mounted on Dayton rims off a grain truck. Day's work and a little welding and problem solved. I use the cub as a yard tug to pull trailers and such, tires will outlast the cub (and me probably!).

I cut the centers a little oversize and used the grinder to get a somewhat tight fit. Dismounted the tires. Then jacked the cub up and fit the rims to the centers while it ran slowly round and round, pretty much sighted it in by eye and tacked it when I had it running true. Took them off and finished welding skipping from side to side to try and control the distortion. After remounting the tires they ran under 1/4" wobble, close enough.

Nice to see people repurposing things. Good Job.

My dad bought one of the first ford 6000 in the early 60's. It came with skinny front tires that went down in our muddy clay soil. So he cut the rims off the original tires and like you welded new rims on so we had wider car tires. His weld job had more than a 1/4 inch wobble, but it was good enough for our purposes.

So your post reminds me of my dad. Thanks geo.

I try to not be critical, however I would not get close to that setup. I saw what one of those rings will do when it fly's off. Low pressure seems to be more prone to fail than high. Reason I post is there could and likely is a little distortion on the rim. Please dont think I trying to be a safety police guy, just had a ring cut a wood post off at base when a ring like that let go on an older rim.
