Removing valves in my AC model M crawler

I'm removing the valves on the head of my AC model M. After removing the keepers, and springs. The valves did now want to come out of the head. There was a very small C clip. I mean small, almost couldn't see it. I removed it and the valve came out. I can't figure what that small C clip was for. Any ideas? Stan

Common in older engines. The clip was there in case something happened to the keeper on the spring. The clip was to keep the valve from dropping all the way into the cylinder.

Has gone by the wayside due mostly to the beancounters.

Also I am guessing the stem can be a bit smaller without that clip.
