Anyone buy parts from Rock Auto. I have bought a few things myself. I am wondering how they can sell brake rotor, and hub assemblies for a 69 Dodge 3500. listed as discontinued for 20.00? They are most likely from China, like everything else. Stan

I buy most of the auto parts that I need for my own vehicles from them. Unless I can't wait for delivery. I choose a brand I know, usually not the cheapest ($5 tie rod ends just seem a little shady). They are good on returns if there is any problem.

No complaints so far. Just be careful to get the part you need so you do not have to return. Much better prices than most of the local, even paying shipping, so I buy most of what I need, unless I cannot wait.

Rock Auto is a good company to deal with. They actually ship form suppliers all over the US. They do not have everything stocked in their warehouse like most other parts houses. The have other vendors that ship parts out for them. The local IWI chain used to ship parts for them here in Dubuque. I do not think they do anymore but they did. It was funny I could order a part from Rock Auto and pay for it on line an have it ship FROM the IWI warehouse cheaper than I could buy the same exact part from IWI directly here in town.

As for the cheap $20 brake rotors. I try to go up a little to the middle cost brake parts. Some of the cheap castings are not of very good quality. My son installed some opn his car and they did not last six months. They seemed to be too soft and wore out quick.

I have had xlnt results from Rock Auto parts. Once a month there is a discontinued parts list on email from them. Most for 93 Dodge diesel pickups are us brands.

I just looked for an air filter for our JD 4600, O'Reillys wants 34 for a Wix, Rock auto is 19.40 for a Wix, but JD parts is only 15.50! I guess I will use JD parts.

A couple of years ago, I got some Wagner brake rotors for my F250 from RockAuto that were about 1/3 the price of any rotor I could buy locally, shipping included. These Wagner rotors were American-made and weighed about 50% more than the Chinese crap sold at the local Irish-named local auto parts store.
With that being said, I'd rather buy a discontinued brake part from RockAuto than to buy something newly manufactured (most likely from China) from any local auto parts store.
I have no problem using a rotor or a brake pad that has been sitting on the shelf for a decade or two.
An oil filter that could possibly dry out is another story.

Tried to order some carburetor parts from them a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't find a phone number on their web page to call them. I won't give out a credit card number over the net. Guess they lost a sale.

In my experience, Rock Auto is a good outfit to deal with.

Just watch the shipping charges, though.

Sometimes reasonable, sometimes not.

An order of a half-dozen parts (as an example) will be shipped from 2 or three different places with full shipping charges from each.

Even with good parts prices, once you click through to the shipping, it can be a deal breaker vs. local sources.

Once you have part numbers, it's often worth it to check fleabay.

Sometimes you can find NOS or OEM parts that someone wants to get rid of at very good prices.

Got to watch the shipping there, as well, though.

> I won't give out a credit card number over the net. Guess they lost a sale.

Why do you think it's safer to send your credit card information over an UNencrypted phone line than over an encrypted web connection?

I'm sure Rock has run the numbers and decided it's more profitable to not provide telephone sales support, even if they lose a few sales.

As far as I know, every new car and truck sold in the USA has brake rotors made in China. I've been buying from Rock Auto for years. Great service and often 1/2 the cost then from local parts stores like NAPA . Rock Auto also has a huge selection including OEM parts at times. You can certainly see exactly what you are buying before ordering so I don't understand the concern.

Go to Google and type in: "RockAuto.com phone number".
I doubt that they will go out of business because you didn't give them your business on a carburetor kit.

Thanks to JDEM for posting about Rock auto a few years ago , I began checking them out when I needed parts and have had excellent results . Only one time I needed to return a taillight assembly because they shipped the e right when I ordered the left, it went smooth and they actually shipped out the correct one before I returned the wrong one! The prices are usually best around, you need to watch the shipping costs as they can be a deal breaker. If your parts ship from all one location many times an additional part or 2 cost very little extra to ship. I often will look for filters spark plugs and other parts I want to keep on hand when I make an order for someting I need and have often found "closeouts" at great savings and often little added shipping costs.Although their online catalog does not support ag equipment or HD parts I have been able to buy maintanance parts and belts thru them by parts # search or knowing the actual belt size. Often these parts were "closeout" deals too. Its easy to look and add/ delete from the cart based on the shipping costs. I just ordered an oxygen sensor for my truck from them , it is an AC Delco oem part and works excellent .

For those worried about quality . Rock Auto usually lists several grades and sources of parts for an application .
Solved the howling and failing Delco fuel pump problems on the truck with a Bosch pump.
Just picked up a new 145 amp alternator for the same old farm truck as the post office . The 1st replacement 105 amp alternator that has been on there 80,000 miles or so charges intermitantly . The alternator took a beating operating at 100% continuous output a few months ago when the camper battery shorted out . The wife and kids drove around for a week wondering what the bad smell was but didn't notice the dim lights and lower than normal voltage.

I buy everything I can from Rock Auto. It seems like everything comes so fast it will make your head spin. It sure beats a trip to town and getting ripped off by the irish store.

Can't always see what you're buying, I just got hydraulic brake hoses for the front of my truck, the banjo bolts were in the picture but not in the bags Delco so the truck sat in the garage 2 more days. Sometimes you see things you aren't buying

I researched and found there are no rotors cast in USA. THey are cast in Brazil or China. Some claim machined in USA but that is referring to machining slots into imported rotors.

Up here north of the border ....... went to the local NAPA store to price out a timing chain kit for a 25 year-old jeep YJ (chain, two sprockets, tensioner, and guide) plus a gasket set for the repair (gaskets, sealant, seal, repair sleeve, etc). Price here was just shy of $300 Canadian ....... Rock Auto price delivered to my front door was $111 Canadian (shipping and duty included). Not too much of a decision to make, it was here in ten days, can't beat that.

NO that's only true for aftermarket. those are 100% china made.

Most (not all) new cars do NOT have china rotors. quality isn't there.

most are still cast and machined here. quality isn't there. there is only 1 foundry in the US that pours pretty much all rotors and drums made here regardless of what vehicle brand or even application including NA_CAR (left the S out since there is nothing stock on them) there are some made in Mexico but not alot. more likely GM and some brembo brakes

i use Rock auto often but have never bought anything there.

I use them as a part research tool.

Most of the time i find a part brand/quality i like then then search their part numbers in amazon or ebbay. usually the same price maybe a bit higher maybe a bit lower but Rock auto shipping usually makes them higher $ than the other 2.

sometimes in my part number search i'll stumble on new OEM parts for the same price. Just picked up a MOPAR tie rod end for my 300M for $16 shipped. they're usually about $90 shipped from the online dealerships.

i've kinda given up on napa. to get the better quality parts you have to spend quite a bit more. our local guys have gotten bigger by buying out other little napas and have expanded hours to compete with Azone and advanced.

Some time ago, I needed a replacement caliper for my gf's son's car. Local prices varied from $75 to over $150. They could not afford that. Looked on Rock auto, caliper was $59.00 BUT the shipping brought it up to local prices.
I finally settled on rebuilding the caliper. Locally, parts were not available. Rock auto had the parts I wanted, and at a reasonable price - about $12.00 - but the shipping nearly doubled it. Still, a BIG saving.

Also, for those who are curious....there are only 3 parts in a caliper to go bad. The boot, the seal, and the piston. Rebuilding involves simply replacing those 3 parts after disassembly and cleaning. Simple, easy, and not very time consuming. When disc brakes became popular back in the 1970s, rebuilding was the standard repair. Now, everything is apparently intended to be throwaway junk.

I have used Rock Auto. I can buy just two wix oil filters for my F350 and pay for shipping and save $10 compared to getting two of them at local stores. I don't know where those guys get the wix filters they sell, but it would seem to me it is the same thing I can buy at the local auto parts stores. I like supporting local business, but it seems like almost everything is 50% more local compared to Rock Auto.

Once Rock Auto sent me a cloth oil filter for my tractor that looked like it had been rolling around in dirt for a few days. I emailed them, asked why would I put that thing in my tractor and they apologized and sent me a new one at no cost right away. Might have even been rush mailed. Pretty good service.

I understand the concern with providing credit card info, however if you call them and give the card info to them over the phone, the transaction is done via the Internet (between Rock Auto and the card company). Something to think about. Many do not think that if you slide your card at a quick shop or gas pump - guess how the transaction is done.

I have used them on occasion. No complaints either. Latest purchase was 2 light bulbs for a GMC Terrain. Low beam and driving light. $12.+ change with shipping. $30.00+ at local Auto Z*ne.
