? on Gear Ratios for 1 Ton Gas Vehicle

Kicking around buying a 1 ton gasser. Probably around a 2011 to 2014. Considering I have always driven diesels, my question would be IF I went to a gasser, probably Chevy or Ford, would the 4:10 gears or the 3:73 gears be the way to go. Most of the driving would be with a trailer, but anymore I don't pull that much, and am not sure if I can justify the extra cost of the diesel.

The truck I have now is a 2004 Duramax and I only have 87K on it for miles. Most of them were in the first couple of years.

What are the thoughts here with those of you that have them? The 3:73 would help the gas mileage when not pulling a trailer for sure, but I am assuming it would kill the power when you are pulling a load. Thus the 4:10 would be better with the load, but worse on the fuel mileage. Just trying to plan ahead. Thanks a lot - Bob

You really need to look at the overall ratio including the transmission. Some of the manufacturers have a large spread in tranny ratios, letting you run a faster rear.

That said I have an 08 Ford w/6.8 and a 4.10 rear. I would not want it any faster for pulling loads.

I would go with 4.10. With the overdrive transmissions, fuel mileage won't suffer a lot empty : will help on power loaded.

I got a 2009 2500HD with 6.0,4.10 rear end and 6 speed Allison. Never under 10 loaded and 12-14 empty. Hauled 7 pregnant heifers 100 miles and back home empty.11.5 for the round trip at 60-75 mph.

If buying used you may have to take what you can find. I had a 460 in an F250 a few years back. Had 3:73's in it. When I first bought it I thought I might have to regear it to 4:10. I got 11 hauling about 8,000 pounds trailer included. The 460 and the 6.8 should be pretty close in HP and torque.

Bob1958,

All due respect, that truck you have is about as miserly on fuel as it gets. Especially when diesel is near gas prices.

The difference between the 3:73 and 4:10's is not as great as you think. At 60 MPH with a 31 inch tire it is only 134 RPM.

The Ford is usually a 4.30:1 ratio with a gas engine to get the max towing rating otherwise it has the low rating . With a 1 ton you might have the 5.30:1 option like the F450s on up have and the RV chassis but not sure on that.

I was thinking along the same lines as dennis min. Is there a real reason to get rid of the truck you have? I'm not a Chevy guy but I have a couple of friends that have duramax diesels with over 300K. Yours is just getting broke in. Just wondering why you would want to trade if your usage is low.

Unless you built a frankentruck then you do not have the Allison tranny. You likely have the GM6L90E tranny which is a 6 speed automatic that debutted beginning in 2007. A fine tranny, but an Allison it is not.

Only the Duramax diesels and the previous generation 8.1 gassers were available factory with the Allison tranny's. 8.1 gasser was out of truck production by 2009 and only available through marine applications nowadays.

To the OP. I would keep the truck you have. At 87k it is not even broke in.

Even if you worried about an upcoming injector set failure, your payment out of pocket will be less than sales tax you gonna pay on buying a different truck.

Fast lane truck did an unusual comparison with a 2002 6.6 duramax with Allison (5 speed) a 2016 duramax with Allison (6 speed) head to head face off towing and empty. The old truck basically did just as well and got better mpg to boot.

I had a 95 Chevrolet one ton dually. It had 454 with 5 speed manual transmission and 373 gears. Plenty of power for pulling heavy trailer. Fuel mileage was not that great (12-13 mpg empty and about 7 mpg with heavy loaded trailer). Know a man who had 454 with automatic transmission and 410 gears. He got a lot less fuel mileage than I did.

I did the same thing. Always had a diesel. Thought, "I really don't need this thing", sold it and bought a really nice F-350 Ford gas burner. Really liked the truck but... not a diesel and fuel mileage was terrible. Sold it and went back to a Cummins.

My 81 F350 with a 460 in it and 4 sp manual tranny has 4:10 gears. Runs fine down the road. Only wish it had a gear between 3rd and 4th.

I have a GMC 2500 with 4.10 and an F250 with 3.73---they both get about the same gas mileage but the GMC will by far outpull the Ford
