Needing help to release tension on Hesston 5540 belts. I have read on old posts that you take 2 long pins from top of baler and place them in a hole around 5" from ground level and lower door on them.

1. I have no pins anywhere
2. I cannot locate holes anywhere the pins might even go
3. Please help if you can
thank you :?

The pins look like regular drawbar pins (ca. 20 mm dia.) and when not in use they should be located in vertical holes in the balers framework on either side right in front of the tailgate and right below the pickup lift cylinders.

For relieving the belt tension open the tailgate all the way open, place said pins in horizontal holes on the side piece of the yoke (don’t know what else to call it) of the belt tension roll. With the pins sticking out the tension roll will be prevented from moving forward in the bale chamber when lowering the tail gate as the pins will press against the back edge of the bale chamber where it meets the tail gate.

I hope this helps. Sorry I can’t take a picture of it on my baler and there is no relevant pic in my operators manual either.

There is something different about this one I guess. I just don't see it. I took a pic of each side, I am not sure if you can mark it or put an arrow etc. Is the yoke inside? I sure do appreciate greatly your kind response.

Yes your baler looks a little different from mine. I think mine might be newer. I have put an arrow where the holes to keep the pins when not in use should be. Maybe a former owner has used the pins for something else. Not a big deal, you can use any piece of shaft of suitable diameter.

I wish I could have showed you a pic of mine but I would be surprised if yours doesn’t have the same tension roll system. And yes the tension roll is inside the chamber. If you open the tail gate fully open and take a pic from the same position as your first pic I shall be happy to see if it has the holes I am talking about. Then I shall put an arrow on the pic for you.

BTW welcome to the forum. I notice you are new here.

Your baler does not have the holes to place the pins in. I don’t know how they expect you to relieve the belt tension then. Might be something they invented later.

I have pointed out where the holes should be referring to my baler. A is what I call the tension roller. B is what I call the side piece of the yoke. C is the missing hole where the pin should be placed. D is the distance from the tension roller = ca. 4”.

On my baler there is a pipe (1” I think) which connects the two side pieces. It is welded on and it is placed where the holes are so the pins will go through the side piece and into the pipe.

I think if you can drill the holes in the side pieces and when you need to relieve the belt tension put a long shaft or a pipe all the way through both side pieces a couple of inches sticking out on both sides you will be fine. If you can not drill big enough holes you could as an alternative weld some big nuts or a pipe on the upper edge of the side pieces. I hope you understand.

Thank you so much. I was losing more hair trying to figure this out. This must be an earlier model, perhaps they jimmied or pryed something somewhere to accomplish the task. Maybe someone else has sen this and can offer something as well. thank you again for you time and effort. Ed in MO

You are welcome. No wonder you couldn’t figure it out. I’m just glad I could help you realize this. From your pics I see the weather is fine so I hope you get your baler back in the field soon. I should have been baling haylage today but it has been raining here all afternoon.

I've owned two 5540's, the old one didn't have holes for pins, the newer one did. My old manual said to raise the tail gate and take two 2x4's and place four inch way up between the press roll frame and it's stops in the front of the baler. then close the gate and belts will loosen. I used 2x4's long enough to lay on the front sheet metal to help hold them in place and slid them between the outside belts and baler sides on top of the stops.
Make sure they are against the sides and on top of the stops good or they can pop out dropping the press rolls retightening the belts while your working on them causing personal injury.
I gave my old manuals to the guy that bought my last 5540.
