I have a Baldor 2 HP motor, 220 volts,I wired it up and it seems to run OK but I have one wire left that isn't hooked to anything, I that normal? It is not a ground wire, thanks for any help,

There are sometimes 2 wires for a thermostat contact. If the motor is too hot it breaks contact. They do not have to be used. Best bet is to double check the wiring diagram on the motor. More info would help too.

You will have two 120 volt wires making up the 240 volts plus one safty ground(usually green). Best to pull cover on back of motor to see if there's a diagram on it.

There should be a connection diagram on the motor. If it's missing, search the model number, open the "data sheet", it will have the connection diagram.

I have seen some single phase dual voltage motors that have an unused wire. But, every wire should have a marking or color code. Sometimes it's inked onto the wire, sometimes it's a stick on or crimped on label. Once you have the connection diagram, you can identify the wire by process of elimination, or ohming out the connections.
