Leather work

Does anyone here do leather work? I sent a belt off to have my grandsons name stamped on it. The belt was black, It came back stamped, but we wanted his name painted silver. They told me they don't paint names on black belts. Is there a special paint for leather? Thanks..

Leather is typically dyed, not painted, and most details are put in with something like embossing, as it's going to be much more permanent than paint. However, here's what Tandy Leather (a long-time leather business) sells for leather paint, and they do have silver, but I don't know how well it would show up on black.

You can paint it look at tandy leather. Probably have to strip of the wax finish paint and reseal the top. I think I use neat lac or shellac.

Where you? Sharon's Leather here in Albion (north of Marshalltown) does a lot of leather work for motorcycle riders might be able to do it. sharonsleather dot com

VERY nice, Gordo! I do some leatherwork myself, but most of mine is more utilitarian than decorative. Just wondering how the paint would hold up on something like a belt that flexes more than, say, a sheath. Don't know the answer, and it's cheap enough for him to try, just wondering as I don't have any direct experience with leather painting.
