1957 Ford 600 series tractor HELP!!!

Hello everyone!

Well, here is the short of it. I am a new homeowner of just over 10-1/4 acres. About 4 or 5 of that is high grass, "brush hoggable" fields.

I purchased a 1957 Ford 600 Series (621 I think) for hauling brush around etc. It currently has a swivel type attachment that is bolted to the front center of the tractor, runs back and is "c" clamped to the ear axle on each side. It can pull wood trailers and hay trailers while swiveling etc.

What I am looking for, is after I get that attachment off, what exactly I will need for the PTO kit/assembly that will allow me to use a brush hog. I know there is a small plate at the rear that will unbolt, so I can fasten PTO gear into there. HOwever I have nothing.

Can someone help in letting me know or trying to figure out exactly what I will need to get it ready for a hog? 3 pt hitch? PTO shaft etc etc.

please help, thank you everyone!

I'm thinking you are in for more work and expense than you are bargaining for.

The x2x machines were the economy models without any frills. You might need to find a lot of internal bits and do some major work. Do they
even have the hyd pump in them?

Probably cheaper to find a tractor with those bits already on it, a x4x or higher number.

I will guess your tractor was cheap, and was a good deal for a towing tractor. Will be expensive to make a 3pt tractor out of it.

If it is still a 620 I agree with Paul, it will most likely be cheaper to sell it and buy one with a PTO, 3 point hitch, and hydraulics. Tractor Data shows it without a pto, hitch, or hydraulics.

For the PTO you will need the shaft and if it does not have the PTO shiftier on the side you will need that also. If you can find a tractor salvage yard the parts from a 640 should fit and maybe even ones form a 840. Plus you may or may not have the 3 point so again if you do not that will limit what type of brush hog you can use since now days most are made for 3 point set ups

I think I would sell that tractor and buy another one. If it must be a ford of that series I would go with a 640-650 or a 641 workmaster. I have
driven all 3 and the 641 was the best but it wasn't worn out. However the 5 speed in the 650 was nice. If you want a live pro I think they made
a 660-661 that had live pto. It is better to buy what you need than make what you have into what you need.

Forget about ever getting that tractor to handle a mower, it will not happen. Look for a 660 or 661 that both will have live PTO that you need for safty with that mower, just stomp the clutch clear down and everything will stop, halfway down and tractor will stop and mower keep on running. And that 5 speed tranny has a lower gear that you will need for the mower. With a 4 speed 640 or 641 you will not have thw slow speed you are going to need but will need that over running PTO coupler, same thing with a 5 speed 650 or 651 no live pto. And you cannot put a live pto in a 4 speed tractor that you have and to buy all the parts used at a parts yard to get a 3 point hitch with the lift and a PTO without figuring any labor and it doesent sound like you are qualified to do the work or you would not have to ask what it would take to upgrade your tractor to a 641 you will have more than twice in a non working atempt than it would cost you to park what you now have and go out and buy TWO corectly equiped tractors.

Hello all! thank you very much for the input, it seems as tho you may be correct (not may be, are correct) about selling the machine.

any ballparks on what I should be asking for it? Purrs like a kitten the thing runs better than new vehicles today. no odd sounds or anything coming from under the hood, starts right up and rides good. pic below. thanks again!

Live and learn. Ask a little higher than you paid and come down to your break even price. Check tractor house dot com for asking prices of those machines. I hope you didn't pay the price of what you really needed because a more savvy buyer probably won't give you that without the hydraulics, PTO and 3 pt. hitch. You might just have to take what you can get and move on, sorry to say.

Next purchase, ask here first. The Ford boards here are also a wealth of knowledge.

Good luck with it and let us know how you make out.

Thanks W B. Yup ya live and ya learn. I paid next to nothing for this machine so I will i am sure at least double or triple my $$$. thank you!

Now you at least know why you had to pay so little. It's a nice looking tractor, too bad it's not equipt with what you need now. Best of luck.
