John Deere tie rod hydraulic cylinder broke

I have a John Deere tie rod cylinder # TY7177 which is a 3 1/2 bore by 8 inch stroke. Had it on a rotary hoe cart early last week and the connecting pin came out (had it pinned in properly) putting all of the load on one side of the yoke. Broke one side off due to side pressure I suppose. This is the yoke at the back of the cylinder with the "O" ring that fits into the cylinder. Deere wants $70 for a new end. I paid $50 for two of these cylinders at a sale. I was wondering if John Deere had another company manufacture these cylinders, if they were still made today, and if I could source the end from the original manufacture. These cylinders were also used on other John Deere equipment such as disks to raise wings, etc. I could try welding the side back on, but would rather have it sturdy and safe. Thanks for any input.

You will not be able to make it as strong by welding it. You can use it some were else that is only in compression not tension. As for finding out who made it for JD. I am not sure who makes them. Energy made them and Cross has made them. You will find that parts are not cheap even from the original manufacture. You can usually buy another cylinder for not much more money.

I had the same thing happen a few years ago and I put a "wanted" ad on here in the classified and found one for $20 from a guy who was salvaging a cylinder. Worth a try.

That part is probably pretty generic for a 3.5" cylinder. What size is the pin hole? I have several wrecked cylinders and will take a loo and see if there's a 3.5" unit.

Andy, Surplus Center has new ends for tie rod cylinders in stock and lists several sizes available. Prices range from $11.95 to around $43. Parts are new. Hope this helps. Mike

Bob, the pin that goes through the yoke to attach it to the implement is 1" diameter. The diameter of the portion that goes into the 3.5 " bore is 3.48 ". The four holes that the tie rods go through are 3.18 " center to center going around not crossways. The portion that slides into the 3.5 " bore is about 1/2 deep. Maybe you will have something. I am going to check surplus center as well. Thanks Bob.

Is it just a standard 3-1/2" x 8" tierod cylinder?

Brand new $110 at Surplus Center. $135 out the door and on your porch in 2-3 days. No wasting a week searching and begging for parts. No finding out something else got wrecked.

You probably need the "ASAE" cylinder which has a closed length of 20-1/2" from pin to pin, as that is what was used commonly on old implements. Otherwise you could get the $80 standard cylinder.
