Hi there, I am looking for a skid steer to haul round bales off the field and around the farm. I only do about twenty five round bales(1,000lbs each) a year and the rest of my hay I small square bale. I have always borrowed the neighbors loader tractor, however its time I get my own machine. Is a Case 1537 too small for these bales, I don't have a huge budget($5,000 Max) to buy a large skid steer, so will this do the job for me? Thanks, Billy12. Also, Is my budget too small, should I put off buying a skid steer until I can afford a bigger and newer one?

A Case 1537 has steering clutches not hydrostatic drives. I would NOT recommend buying one just because of that single factor. Also I am not sure if the Case 1537 has a quick tach bucket/bale spear. To be blunt $5000 will not buy you much of a skid steer. Good ones are going to be more in the $7500 and up range. Also a skid steer is not the best thing to drive around in a field with. They are rough riding and slow. If you have even a medium size tractor I would recommend a front end loader for it over a cheap skid steer. You can buy a pretty good loader for under $5000. Most any of the newer loaders will be quick tach to the tractor and bucket both.

Tell us what tractors you have.

P.S. A smaller skid steer does not have much reach and lift height. A front end loader has more of both. If you plan on stacking bales this is some thing to think about. The only advantage of a skid steer loader is maneuverability. So if you need to use it in tight places than the skid steer would be better but out in the field a loader wins hands down.

Thanks, I have a farmall 706,560,m,and super c. A few years ago I put a loader on the m, instead of the belly pump on the tractor I have a hydraulic pump that runs off the PTO. Hypothetically if the PTO pump had enough pressure to lift a round bale( and I think it does) could the m handle that kind of weight out front? I could put forks on that loader to move bales around.

1537 would be used one for years for 800lb bales 1000 pounders couple hundred pounds of weight on the back helps find a 1840 if you can great skidloader dad bought one brand new in 1997 15000 hrs on it now never had any major trouble wheel bearing on right rear 5 years ago or so bolts came loose and broke off for the hyd pump titan wanted $4000 to come get it and fix did it ourselfs where it sat by the bags for less then a $100.
there is a 1845 by madison sd for $5000

The IH "M" would easily handle a 1000 LBS. Round bale. The only trouble with w PTO pump is when you clutch the pump stops. There are kits that put a hydraulic pump between the mag/distributor and that gave you live hydraulics. The 560 or 706 would be better loader tractors because of the live hydraulics but the IH "M" would work PK for just 20-30 bales. If that loader on that IH "M" is one of the old style pipe loaders they would lift a 1000 LBS bale easily.

That "m" without power steering would be a beast to steer with a loader and a big bale of hay on the front. Just saying! Happy farming.

Don't buy any case clutch type skid loader, the 3 shaft gear box with hyd pump on one side and VS pulley on the other side is a source of constant trouble, ours has averaged 400 hrs between major parts replacement, that setup just is not long lived. Gear box and VS new parts for those 40 year old machines are nearly extinct, and used are all worn out. Buy an older Bobcat, parts are available for them or buy a hydro machine if you must have case.BTDT.
