old farmers/loggers leg problem

Noticed several years ago that whenever I 'barked' (scraped) my shin, the wound took longer to heal up than when I was younger & much longer to heal than my arms, chest & face heals now (73 yrs old). Trick my buddy TJ taught me was to put liquid vitamin E on skin wounds to heal faster. So on the latest round of scrapes I finally used liquid Vit.E on'em & sure enough the wounds healed couple of weeks sooner, tho marks still show as red places. So I drew my leg up close enough to admire the great progress & I think I see the reason for slow healing. The shin is a solid mass of scar tissue! From the ankle almost to the knee. Never broke/fractured the leg or had a serious injury but 70 yrs of falling over trailer hitches, plows & stumps & briars added up to one huge injury. Anybody else notice this?

Long ago I started wearing chainsaw pants. Not only for saw protection but to avoid scrapes to legs.

Have a red area on one leg where scrapped it and then I scratch it. Took over a year for it to heal. Don't think the red will ever go away. Today when my leg itches there, got to bit my teeth and not scratch it.

Have your fasting blood sugar checked.

I have had problems healing shins for years and have ended up in hospital a number of times. I am a controlled diabetic and still have problems. I am healing one now that a branch got me and its my fault for not wearing my chainsaw chaps. If I get on antibiotics right away and keep it clean and elevated I can get it healed in two weeks and if I don't do that it can be up to months or a hospital stay. I also have good results putting Silver Sulfadiazine cream or Altabax on wound. I don't use Altabax very often its a $1,000.00 for 30 gram tub and I still have to pay several hundred dollars after insurance. My shins are so beat up that they look like a war zone.

I have the same type of shins--all scars. Have two big nicks right now, 1 from cutting wood and don't really remember where I got the other one?? At a few months from 72, I still heal well, but not as fast as when I was younger. First nasty one I remember was missing the drawbar on dad's farmall M. My wife did the same thing on her dad's M when she was young.

I am not that bad but do have a serious burn on my leg from when I was a little kid. Also have to take blood thinners cause of a heart valve. Winter is the worst. Keep everything coated with NIVEA Cocoa Butter cream. The Silver works when I get an injury too. This winter I used compression socks for a few weeks. THis photo is when I banged into a pallet at work. They were p..s..y when I took off two days!!! Will have to try the liquid Vitamin E trick.

Smoking is also something that impedes healing. Micro surgeons will reject otherwise viable reconstructive attachment of amputated limbs due to smoking alone. Can't get enough blood flow through a smoker's blood vessels and capillaries . The tissue dies even through the operation was a success.
