We have several people camping on the property we care for. These folks were wanting to relieve themselves in the woods without digging a cat hole and could not understand why that was unacceptable. Essentially, I need to come up with a list of pertinent info for not so sharp people.

So far:
Use the restroom. If you must use the woods, use a cat hole.
You pack it in you pack it out. Nothing left behind, including trash.
Don't set up near the road or anywhere your tent may be run over by vehicle in the dark.
No fires of any type, to include sterno or other small stoves (We are near where the big fires were in Mendocino and Lake Counties, CA).
Don't feed horse or cattle.

Well if you just care for it there is little you can do unless you are given full control over the property. Even then letting people camp. hike, or just be on your property is asking for trouble in my opinion. No campers no issues.

Exacting why i quit camping; tent or trailer. Trash, cig butts, urine, feces; dog and human, you name it; left everywhere. And don't even bring up bath houses. I prefer my comfortable home in the country on my own acreage.

That's why my RV is completely self contained. I don't have to dump gray or black water until such time I can do so at an approved facility and I leave no trash or obvious evidence I was even there. Plus I have my own clean comfy queen size bedroom and bathroom I know who cleaned and who slept in the night before. If don't wish to travel I have my own farmstead in the country to kick back and relax also, life is good we have been blessed.

Human nature can be pretty disgusting at times but it is what it is. My observation has been pay to camp areas are far better respected than free camping areas. Maybe if you charged fees to cover expense of maintaining the property people would better respect the place. Having someone vist campers to see if they have evrything they need and to answer questions go's a long way also. Are these the same people useing property over and over or is it various people at various times? Depending on which, they require different approachs.

The company that I worked for bought a camper mounted on a 3/4 ton pickup, back when RV campers first became popular. It was available to employees. The first person to use the camper was an engineer and his wife. When they got back from a week's vacation, other employees asked how they liked the camper. He said that it was okay for him, but his wife said that sleeping and cooking in that camper was no vacation for her!

A couple other people used it and declared that was it was not really a comfortable vacation. Word go around and nobody else requested to use the camper again so the company sold it!

My idea of camping is the Holliday Inn down beside the Interstate, TV Telephone Cement Pond, Room Service . Lots of free parking. We had a motor home once. I hated that thing. All the time we had it we stayed in a motel and ate in restraunts. Was fun to travel in but to have to deal with the holding tank and the bathroom was so small and the bed was not comfortable at all. Just hated that thing and one day a school teacher from Syracuse University came along, Said he knows all about that thing. I helped him get rid of his money and I laughed all the way to the bank. Never again. ...Jack

As I have gotten older I tend to agree with you about the Holiday Inn. More so I am getting much more fond of my own bed. Just wish in was in a house located in the middle of a section of land. Not that I don't like people just like to have a little more privacy than town living affords.

These are guest of the owners' daughter. We cannot charge nor overly restrict. They are largely clueless.

Add to your list:
Other than a 10" deep hole for latrine, which gets covered (upon single use) no digging.
No cutting of, climbing, or damaging trees or bushes.
No cutting of fences.
No wandering into the building area, no building access even in a storm.
No driving any powered equipment or vehicles except as noted in the agreement.
No Water or supplies are available at the residence.
Poisonous plants and plants you may be allergic to, are present. It is your responsibility to avoid these.
Wildlife is not to be chased or harassed.
All equipment and machines are not to be touched or sat on, even it it looks inviting.
Do not invite others to your camp.
do not cut trenches around your tent, use a ground tarp.
Alcohol use should be controlled such that it is not an issue.
There shall be no illegal drug use.

After living in a tent for 8 months on Taiwan with Red China threatening to bomb us off the island, I was more than glad to get back to Butler huts at Atsugi, Japan.

Plus living in tents for shorter periods elsewhere. Early in our marriage, my wife suggested we get a tent and try camping. I asked her why would anyone in their right mind voluntarily live in a tent.

We used to take our kids to a state park for 4-6 days every summer. We had our own rules beyond the campground rules. Leave it CLEANER than we found it. The state park campgrounds were pretty well managed.

Wife and I have used 4 different campers over the years. Some good and comfortable, others not so much. The big think is you can have a bed where you want it when you want it. Not wanting to be someplace for something that is going on till bed time and then for the motel having to drive a hundred miles to find one leaving at 9 or 10 at night and being able to be back again the next morning at 8. You would be lucky to get to bed at midnight to 1 in the morning and then you would have to get up at 5 in the morning to get where you need to be at 8 that morning. Perhaps 4 hours sleep in motel verses 8 hours in camper. Then the cost of driving that hundred miles each way adds up. Then if you were wanting to spend 4 nights at something and you have to drive that far it would be like you loosing 2 nights of sleep out of the 4. So motels will only work a small part of the time, even if they would be more comfortable.
