OT Brake fluid for older cars

Need to bleed the brakes on my '48 Hudson, after putting on new wheel cylinders. Have some DOT 3 brake fluid- is that the proper stuff? Looked in the manual, no help, I guess brake fluid back in those days didn't have any DOTs.

Use anything glycol based, DOT 3,4, or 5.1.

The only thing you cannot mix is DOT 5, which is silicon based.

If you ever find it necessary to completely go through the brake system, replace or kit all the wheel cylinders and master cylinder, and thoroughly flush the lines, then you could change over to DOT 5.

It is a favorite for collector vehicles and recreational vehicles that do a lot of sitting because it does not absorb moisture. It won't rust the bottom of the cylinders or form the black goo that glycol fluid does.

I had the brake system open on a 20 year old Harley, had DOT 5 from the factory. The fluid looked perfectly clear!

Not sure where you got that info but bad things happen if you mix silicone i.e. DOT 5 with regular, or mineral oil like the Ford tractor brakes used
