560 Farmall

I have a 1959 Farmall 560 diesel I am told has a burnt exhaust valve. I am to the end of my rope with this tractor. It has straight tin, nice paint, excellent rubber front and rear, byt rears are mismatched, fast hitch, new seat, tac, steering wheel, new brakes and also has fenders. I am thinking of selling it to just be done. It ran fine before I began "restoring" it and now after getting the wiring worked on, I am told it has the valve issue. I am in MN, wondering what I could maybe get out of it. It runs presently, but only on 5 cylinders.

How long did it set while restoring it? Doesn't have a stuck valve does it? Gummed up injector from setting?

Spending 300 on a head repair seems like chicken feed compared to the value of the tractor when running. It is easy to feel betrayed by what you thought was almost done.
Make sure the valve is actually burnt. Pull the valve cover and look for a bent pushrod and a valve stuck open, or closed. This is easy and a possible cause of the misfire. (what tests were done. If it was a five foot analysis, get a different opinion. (A five footer is listening from 5 ft away, and not doing a compression check, or other diagnosis. Or sell it and let your investment in a good machine be passed on to someone that will grin like a Cheshire cat eating bumble bees. Jim

I'd pull the valve cover and give it a looksey as the others said it could be a valve train issue that could be solved for minimal cost and not that much time. Even if it is a burnt valve pulling the head (if you have the time & talent to do so) and having an automotive machine shop re work it would probably almost be a break even proposition for parts and outside labor verses selling it as a 5 cylinder special.

My area of MN they are not worth much running, 3500 or so now. Running on 5 cylinders? Maybe 2K here if you are lucky. I watched the 560's replacement, the 706D sell at auction last year. Ran good, nice tin, good rubber all it needed was paint for 2800. So even 2K would be on the high side. CL has a 560D listed with OK paint and tires with a 3 bottom fast hitch plow for 3800. Supposed to have a rebuilt TA and new clutch. Another one, with an 8' 2 stage snow blower, chains and Dual Loader, been on there for a while, asking 5K as a package. A 560D with a loader decent runner and tin sold at auction last month near Perham MN for about 2800 IIRC.

And you have to remember that those are asking prices, not selling prices. If you are looking to recoup what you've spent I hope you don't have much in it. If you have more than 1K to 1200 in it you ain't gonna be happy.

I wouldn't mind having a 560D. Always liked those tractors. But I can buy a good running one pretty cheap. Heck got a guy now trying to sell me a 706 gasser, runs good, good tin, rubber about 80%. He's asking 3K and I'm thinking that he'd take 2500. Just don't want something that size in gas.

Trying to sell it as is, which means there could be one of several issues, some expensive to repair means it has to be priced right for it to actually sell.
