steel rollers in mower conditioner

What are positive and or negative things with steel rollers on a mower conditioner. I have some petrified wood chips in some of my hay fields.

Well first off I'll say this. I have a NH460 that has one of each. The one that has a rubber coating on it well the rubber is coming off at one end and has been that way for decades so the rubber rollers tend to not last as long as a steel one. Ya probably good and bad on both and I have seen both types and so far never seen how one is better then the other. Other then the steel type last a whole lot longer

Plus all the ones I have sen the rollers are mounted in such a way that they have springs that hold them tight so if something thick get in between them they spread out so as to let the piece go threw them and then snap back closed again I know on my NH460 I have had stick go threw the rollers as big as my for arm

Neighbor had one you could always tell by the noise when he cut. It had bars welded on it and that was a real mess when that bar came loose. If you get something jammed in a haybine and if you don't have live power you can simply shut the tractor down engage the pto put the tractor in reverse let the tractor roll back and that will reverse the haybine.

Not sure what you're meaning here since virtually no PTO's will reverse with the transmission. The only exception are oddball "ground drive" PTO's such as what was available for Jeep CJ's or a special setting on some foreign tractors. On all regular tractors the PTO always turns the same direction regardless of the direction of travel since it is driven upstream of the transmission. (The Jeep PTO drive was driven off the transfer case so it would reverse and change speeds depending on the transmission gear selected.)
